Has anyone purchased or checked out the new Grizzly 18″ 3hp bandsaw that is currently on sale: http://www.grizzly.com/outlet/G0506X
It is priced similarly to the 18″ Rikon which I’ve been seriously considering. The Grizzly is heavier by over 100 lbs., boasts a 3hp motor, but only has a resaw capacity of 9 3/8″ compared to 12″ for the Rikon. Also the Grizzly has a minimum blade width of 3/8″ compared to 1/4″ for the Rikon.
Any opinion on which would be the better long-term investment for a hobby shop?
Also, which is better: a single-phase or 3-phase motor?

3 phase can't be used unless you have 3-phase power available. You can use a converter, but that's an additional expenditure.
There are advantages to 3-phase motors (longevity, simplicity, a cheaper price, and the ability to be speed-controlled being four), but you need the right juice to use 'em. They are cheaper to buy, but harder to resell for the exactly same reason.
Resaw capacity is terrible. Have a look at the G0514X (definitely single phase unless you're in a industrial setting). And you'll save a few $$$ to boot.
