new mantel over granite hearth
I just installed a granite hearth. the granite is in a corner a 45 piece connecting the two perpendicular walls. there is wall board above the granite. I want to design and make a decorative mantel. this is not a fireplace, but rather a wood stove is centered on this three sided area. a hole is in the granite with the thimble going to the chimmeny.
does anyone know of books or such that might give me some ideas as to the design?
thank you

You can look at http://www.fireplaces.com. They have hundreds of mantles.
Before I built my fireplace mantel, I bought four books on the subject, looking for ideas. These are: Fireplace & Mantel Ideas, by John Lewman; Making Mantels, by David Getts; Step-by-Step to a Classic Fireplace Mantel, by Steve Penberthy; and Building Fireplace Mantels, by Mario Rodriguez.
I just looked through all these books to see if any of them showed a design for the setup you're describing. They don't: they all focus on building a mantel against a flat wall. However, they do have wonderful ideas and some extraordinary looking projects. My overall favorite of the four is the one by Rodriguez. You may be able to adapt one of these designs to your use.
By the way, after purchasing all these books I ended up using a design from a Workbench magazine I already had on my shelf.
If you are in the Oakland, California area as your address suggests, I would be happy to loan you these books to look at as I live nearby. Send me a personal e-mail and we can set it up.
