Just got some new old cabs for free from a costomer who is having their bathroom redone (not by me) and will be installing them in my workshop. Any tips for installing them? what type of top/counter should I put on? I’ll post some pics when I’m finished w/ HW

hi andy,
how many cabinets and what size are they? i've installed many cabinets. typically one needs to hang them as plumb and level as possible and one screws them through the backs and into the studs of the wall. its always a good idea to get help. good luck.

it's just two basecabinets, only one hanging one. not very heavy. Their #1 importance is storage of tools/paint the tops would probably just have junk on top most of the time, mabey sometimes I would do mini glueups (i.e. picture frames, boxes, etc.)

andy,
Quick and dirty approach: Use a French cleat to hang the upper cabinet. Make a 2" x 4" platform frame on the floor sized for the base cabinets; maybe inset a bit for toe space on the bottom of the bases. Level the platform, set the bases on top of the platform frame and screw the backs to the wall studs. Add your countertop and Bobs your uncle.

Andy,
What you want to use them for is needed to provide a proper answer.
I did the same thing...populated my workshop with old kitchen base cabinets and wall cabinets. It's inexpensive and very functional.
For the base cabinets, I just attached a 3/4 plywood top and covered this with cheap white formica. Be sure to leave an overhang in the front for clamping stuff to. I recommend the white formica cause it's easy to clean and reflects lots of light. Do a good job with the lamination so it doesn't come up. Just follow the instructions on the contact cement can and its rather easy.
