Welcome. What do you hope to make? What do you have so far to work with?
Thanks for your acknowledgement. Set up the shop with a few of the obvious power tools along with a start up of handtools.
Particulary interested in making box type gifts or small cabinets.
If you don't mind saying, where are you? I often wish that I hadn't had to figure a lot of stuff out the hard way - reading about it and fumbling by myself in the shop. The learning curve is much faster if you can find some folks in your area who will share. You may find out about clubs or resources if you fill in your profile and some co-located knotheads pipe up.
I'm in Lethbridge Alberta, but don't believe there is much in the way of woodworking clubs here. But, you are definitely right, it would be a much lower learning curve.
You would be surprised how many knotheads are out there, I'm a little to far north for you, but I'm sure there is other woodworkers around your area, follow Samson's advise and fill out your profile. Welcome aboard.

Mike,
Where is Buck Lake? I'm familiar with Alberta, I used to work in the patch. After 10 years on the rigs, I went to work for Wheatherford Oil Tools. I ended up all over the place with Wheatherford. I then moved to Calgary, before going south to the US. I really do miss Calgary.
It is great to see so many Canucks on the site!

Its about 20 minutes southeast of Drayton Valley, 30 minutes north of Rocky Mountain House, 45 minutes southwest of Edmonton. The patch is slow this year with the recession and all, but that's given me allot more time to spend in the shop. It was May Long this last weekend so we got our annual four inches of snow yesterday, I bet you don't miss that. I talked to a friend yesterday from Calgary, he said they where getting the snow to. Spring has been slow to come this year the trees are just starting to green up. Oh well a couple of months and everyone will be complaining about the heat. Are you still working in a oilfield related job? I look after a small crew around this area, we do small pipelines and set up the buildings on the lease after the well has been completed.
Mike
Mike,
I wish I was still in the patch. When things crashed in the 83, I worked the North Slope in Alaska for couple of years as Paramedic for Arco. Then headed to Chicago and retired from the Ambulance a couple of years ago. I was in Calgary working on a project for the Alliance Pipeline. We built a bunch of buildings in Calgaryn and then Premay hauled them to the sites along the line. The I had to go set them all up. When we finished the Alliance, the patch was slow, so I headed back to the states again. Back in the 70's we did a lot of holes around your place. I was on Challenger 50 @ Panther Mtn, drilling for Shell Oil. Panther 7 we were there on lease for over a year. We td'ed at 20,040 ft, you talk about a pita to trip for a bit. I was working Motors at the time, I used to throw chain in my sleep after coming off tower. It is beautiful country around there, that is what I miss the most. We would head up to Kananaskiss country on the weekends and campout. Makes me homesick thinking about it.
If the opportunity presented itself, I would be back there in heart beat.

I saw my new bride that just looked at me and called for her father to protect her..
He said I think He is Ok.. You still are dressed and not crying...
Thanks Mike, and will do

Not sure if you get to Calgary often or not, but there is a good source of woodworking stores there, Lee Valley has hand tool demos and such, I have never been to Black Forest but they have woodworking courses I have to get down there and check them out. For wood suppliers there is PJ White Hardwoods Ltd. and of course a few Windsor Plywood stores. For power tools, House of Tools, Felder Machinery, Busy Bee Tools and there are probably more that I don't know about, as I usually go to Edmonton. You can learn a lot from reading articles and forums on this Website. Happy woodworking.
Mike
Thanks for the info. They are all good names. Black Forest I have visited and it is a really good supplier of various woods and tools.
new to everything.. Big smile on that one...
I have been woodworking for many years and sometimes I feel that way! Especially when I make a mistake that cost me alot of MONEY!
Welcome aboard. Don't trip on the gangplank!
