New to woodworking; need help with Maple trunk!
Hello!
I am very new to woodworking, and really need a some advice! I recently acquired a large maple stump, appx 3′ diameter x 18″ high. The tree was felled over the summer, and it has been outside since.
I would to make this into a coffee table by preserving and sealing the wood, and placing it on casters.
Here are my questions:
1. How long do I let the wood dry out in my garage?
2. What is the best way to preserve the wood so it doesn’t crack?
3. What should I use to seal the bark? (The bark is in really good condition and there is no separation from the tree at this point.)
4. What can I use to seal the exposed wood? I’ve seen resin used, and an oil/poly mix and some other things. I’m not sure what is best.
Thank you in advance for any advice/help you can offer!

I had the same problem a few months ago! Hopefully, a guy from DegreeWay, who had written my essays, helped me with it. By the way, at this source you can find a lot of interesting things about woodworking too.
