We’re moving from Maui to Prescott, AZ about the middle of August.
We’re getting the things ready that the movers will pack and destroy and deliver to us in Prescott. We have a $10,000 limit, including the car. Weight matters.
My wife looks at our garage containing my (very modest at this time) collection of tools including my Grizzly 6″ jointer, 14″ bandsaw, 10″ contractor’s table saw, drill press, planer, boxes of hand tools.
She says, “This stuff is all very heavy. Why don’t we just have a garage sale and you can buy new stuff when we get to Arizona?”
(!!!!!!!!!!)
“Reeeally?!,” I gasp, recovering as quickly as possible after a few seconds of not being sure I am in the correct universe. “Well . . . ok.”
This could get good.

Sell the heavy stuff and ship the hand tools separately.
Remember that wood shrinks more in Arizona!

Prescott's nice but Maui?
Gregg,Maui is truly paradise . . . to spend 10-14 days on vacation in any one of the many world-class resorts where one has to be prepared to pay for the privilege. It is stunningly beautiful - while one is in vacation mode and everything seems serene and easy.I love Maui and I will miss certain aspects, but it's an entirely different thing to be here on vacation vs living here and earning a living. No need to describe the problems. They are many and they are not trivial. I've been here since 1991 and before that, spent 2 weeks vacation twice a year from 1984. I'll visit here often in the future, but I'll not have to repeat the mantra any more, in frustration at some shortcoming, shortage or material deprivation, "Well, that's the price we pay for living in Paradise."You betcha Prescott is nice. Even better, it's in America. And I'll be buying new tools when I get there!Rich
"Maui is truly paradise . . . ... You betcha Prescott is nice. Even better, it's in America. ..."
So, Maui isn't part of "America", huh?

Bill,
Tsk. Now, why would you even infer such a thing?

BTW, make sure you have the big iron strapped down when you haul it through Jerome. Gettin' through that town will give you vertigo.:-)

I spent a few months in Prescott. Monsoon season '99. If the Prescott brewing company is still there, you have to try their Raven maniac stout. They had a real good porter too, but the name escapes me. Good town.
Dustin,Yes, there appears to be a healthy micro brewery selection there.Monsoon season. Did it rain much? How humid did it get?
Humidity was never a problem. They call it monsoon season, but it was more of a flash flood season. Late August to mid September, you get a ton of sudden thunder storms. It would rain buckets for 20 mins, totally flood the storm sewers, and then the streets. Strangest thing I ever experienced.
The elevation there is about 5300ft, so the climate is odd. Cool at night, and hot during the day.
Neat old town, lots of old west type places downtown. There are 3 decent size colleges there, so it can get crazy when class is in session(main reason I stayed for a few months).
I still live on Maui-28 years now. Cabinetmaking/woodworking is exceptional here-it wasnt always. I have a new shop at home of 2500 sf and am figuring out what new tools to put in it and the nice thing is that it is all paid for. No refinancing was necessary. I imagine I will retire from here someday but I cant imagine to where. I just hope the wealthy folks looking for unique stuff keep coming here. Good luck in Prescott. Aloha, mike
I've been in seriouspain for a year. your good luck is the first thing that has made me feel as though there is a little hope. Please give your sweet wife a real kiss.

Richard,There is always hope. Sorry to hear of your problem. Don't give up.Rich
