Hello Fellow wood workers I have just joined the forum and in the beginning “they” suggest that we introduce ourselves, so we are. I live in the Maritimes (Canada) where I work as a fire fighter and with my shift which allows for 4 days off every 4 days it allows to me time to learn about creative wood working. I have a small shop which is a 1 1/2 car garage ( don’t ask about a half a car). I like hand tools and love the few power tools that I own. I prefer one of a kind stuff using woods natural to my area as well as exotics when I can find them. My projects keep quite busy and I enjoy creating them but I do get frustrated with finishing. I am considering a cheap hvlp turbine? I have used many hand applied finishes, oils and the alike but I am still mixed up when it come to mixing finishes. I just read the article on finishing in Fine Wood Working, however I wish they would publish an article on to combine finishes i.e. can I wipe on an oil then put a poly over it / Are all finishes compatible with each other?
Thanks in advance regards
Kmaskos

Welcome! Different finishes are not always compatible with each other; water-based products in particular. A good reference to begin with is "Understanding Finishing" by Bob Flexner. Highly recommended as it is one of the few books that explains the chemistry (so a non-chemist can understand it).
Thanks for the info
Karl
I have had good luck using shellac on things that I have done. It is very forgiving and easy to apply. I would recommend you using your local library and avail yourself of any books they might have on finishing and check out back issues of finewoodworking.
would add to the bookshelf Hand Applied Finishes by Jewitt and Understanding wood finishing by Flexner.
Kmaskos, welcome to the forum.
Add my vote to the list for Bob Flexner's book, "Understanding Wood Finishing." The book does a very good job of explaining all the finishing products and how they work together (or not). A good reference to have handy.
Jeff Jewitt's book, "Great Wood Finishes" is another good book to have.

First I would like to say I admire fire fighters I think it takes alot of couage and dedication to do your job. I concurr with the suggestion for the book "Great Wood Finishes" by Jeff Jewitt Its a very straight fwd book and mmakes the mystique about finishing very easy to understand. He also has a good video out on coloring wood
At Darkworks cut to size made to burn......Putty isnt a option
