I have read articles and mulled over plans til I thought my eyes would fall out, and there is still one thing I can’t figure out….
I want to build a crosscut sled specifically for use with a box joint blade set, but I KNOW i’ll want to use it with regular blades as well. All of the sled plans I see have the blade slit cut with no clearance, for use with a regular blade. IF I build a sled for my box joint 1/4″ – 3/8″ blade set, will the blade slit be too wide to be functional with regular thin blades?? Do I need to build 2 seperate sleds, or will it not make much of a difference?
Thanks for any help!

Malice (that's an interesting Knotter name...),
I would simply cut a piece of 1/4 masonite (or something like it) the same size as the top of my sled and fasten it down with some countersunk screws. You can have a fresh top at anytime by replacing the masonite. Welcome to knots!

Edit: Best is spelled with a "B". Sorry....

Genius! Perfectly simple. Thank you much.
Malice has been my alias for more years than I care to count, I use it for everything :)
Thanks again!

So that would be "malace with forethought"....
Malice,
Another approach could be to make an insert ala tablesaw insert that can me made to fit different widths of blades that you contemplate using on the sled.
I'm thinking along the lines of Lon Schleinings (sp?) article here about fine tuning a crosscut sled. Let's say the thickness of your sled table is ¾". You could make a ¼" deep mortise sized to accept the various inserts that you might need.
Does this make sense?
