Need suggestion for finish on Red Oak. Is for a bench so grain filler not
needed. Will apply by hand, oil/varnish ok? In area of high humidity,
(Central FLorida).

Try orange or amber shellac as a seal coat. One part shellac to 3 parts denatured alcohol. It dries in 15 - 30 mins., provides a good adhesion base for most finishes (sand lightly with a 320 grit paper & remove dust before finishing), and gives a nice, warm look to red oak.
