Dear Eck,
I am also looking for the same type plans for a newport secretary. Should anyone be kind enough to give you a lead, could you please pass the info on to me? My web address is Grebnesor1 @ AOL.com
*Eck: Check "Masterpieces of Furniture" by Verna Cook Salomonsky, Dover Press, Plate No. 87-88, which shows a Block-Front Secretary. Detailed? No. The macro dimensions are there. There is a FWW video by Philip C. Lowe "Measuring Furniture for Reproduction" which would help fill in the blanks. Lowe sells full-size plans: Check www1.shore.net/~furniture/. He does not list exactly what you want. You could contact him, if anyone would know, he would. Also check "Reproducing Antique Furniture" by Franklin H. Gottshall, pages 138-145, showing a block-front chest on chest. This will give you details of the interior pieces. If you cannot find you first choice, you might want to make this instead. It is a Wallace Nutting reproduction. Mr. Gottshall worked for Nutting in his early days. Mr. Gottshall died about a dozen years ago. There are about ten Gottshall books, each a treasure of information. Cordially.
*Check out Taunton Press' "American Furniture of the nineteenth century", and "Queen Anne furniture". I have used both of these and they are excellent resources. The queen Anne book has all dimensions & plans for each piece. Its been a while since I used the American Furniture book, so I can't remember if it had drawings or not. It also includes how to on carving cabriole and claw foot legs. Good luck, Jim
*Jim: You're right, they're great books. "Queen Anne Furniture" is by Norm Vandal. "American Furniture of the 18th Century" by Jeffrey P. Greene. There are no measured drawings of specific pieces in Greene's book, but it is still very valuable for its descriptions of how 18th c. pieces went together. I once wrote to the editors of FWW and lobbied for a sequel to the Vandal book. I'm still hoping.
*The website I gave for Philip C. Lowe was not correct. It should be www1.shore.net/~furnitur/
