Thanks for the info you’ve already provided John and for your book Care and Repair of Shop Machines.
In preparing to build my first handtool woodworking bench, your design, I’m having trouble seeing the end vise attachment. I understand the 2 clamp faces are screwed to a stationary piece attached to the two pieces on edge at each side of the 10″ well. Does that piece of wood attach to the ends of the two long pieces, or is it attached between them, i.e. do the screws go into the end grain of the long pieces or do they go into the end grain of the short piece the clamp faces are attached to?
Perhaps it doesn’t matter.
Thank you. Hope your new work will be gratifying.

The piece that the clamps attach to is between the two long pieces that make up the sides of the well.
If you look at page 100 of the original article there is an end view of the bench where you can see that the cross piece is set in several inches from the ends of the well. Two screws go through the sides of each long piece into each end of the cross piece. In addition, the oak face that sits on top of the cross piece has screws that go into both the cross piece and the side pieces of the well.
Good luck with your bench.

John, Thanks for your attention and response. I joined the web-site 15 day trial before re-subscribing to FWW after buying used copies for many years so have to cancel to avoid the charge but have learned a great deal from you and from your other responses and other postings regarding the workbench. I'll incorporate the refinements in the planeing(sp?) beam, the additional couple inches of separation of the two long pipes, the use of a firring strip on each side of the well to locate and hold the moveable panels, the little level on the beam.
I'm sorry you don't have some proprietary return from your design. If asked I call it the "John W. White 4 clamp, 6 pipe traditional hand tool woodworking bench and proud of it." I guess "traditional" describes the hand tools to be used at the bench, not the workbench design. And I have re-subscribed to FWW so I suppose I'll be paying the $15.00 for the web-site when I have time to use it again. I hope everyone is aware of the great value in your book Care and Repair of Shop Machines. No Additional Response Needed. Bruce
