I got it I got it
You know . . . . my Christmas present from Queenmasteroftheuniverseandbabybunnytrainer.
Larry surprised me the other day and called. He says ” Hey Kid, do you want to get a real plane or just fool around ? “
I said a real plane oh yes please.
So he sent it.
It came.
I wasn’t home
. . . so the mail dude took it away again and put it in the post office.
I had to wait until the next morning to get my new plane.
That’s not fair.
I was all ready for it last night. I was mentally prepared.
The package wasn’t waiting for me when I got home.
Not fair.
The post man took it away with him.
Sigh . . . piss and moan.
This morning I left extra early. Goin’ to the post office. Gonna get my plane.
unhuh , unhuh
I had to show all sorts of I. D., skin scrapings from the nap of my neck, they even made sure it was me by looking at my toes. Some of them are bent from wearing cowboy boots when I was a kid.
Yep he’s got the bent toes. Give him the box.
I had to go to a park and open the box and check out the plane right away before work.
Had to work all day before I could try out the plane. Is that fair ? On a day like this !
New hand plane day and I don’t get the day off with pay.
I don’t understand that.
Fooy
It simply stands to reason when a person gets a new hand plane they should get the day off to try it out. If a person works all day then they may be too tired to give the new hand plane moment , NHPM, the full and complete attention that such an occasion deserves.
This needs to be a national standard. A world standard. NHPM DAY. Off with pay.
Think how this can stimulate the economy.
Well I am smiling now. The photos I took says it all.
Larry found time to make a batch of finish planes and so after much anticipation and abated breath I am the proud and humble owner of the pinnacle of the western wooden plane maker’s art.
It is SWEET !
So much subtle yet practical detail and so perfectly executed. Perfect meaning it is obvious care and love for the final product were paramount from beginning to end. (and I am one heck of a critical and picky person)
Thank You Larry Williams of Old Street Tools
PS: I guessed before I bought the plane that such a narrow and deep throat would make it difficult to remove the curls out of the throat.
Turns out it is no problem at all to keep the throat cleared out.
The very first curls !
OK now we go for the face of the board
Another live action shot. OH YAH !

New Plane
I don't know Roc ? You could have purchased a plane from Sears that even comes with a screw to advance the blade -
That thing looks like something the Flintstones used. What's your present back to the Mrs. - man you can't beat that plane for a surprise uh Mrs. Roc !
SA
Are You Sure ? Well I don't want to do anything out of the norm
> a plane from Sears that even comes with a screw to advance the blade <
Oh that sounds too easy. I like a little more adversity in my life than that.
Oh Ok why not . . . but only under one condition . . . that it is made in China by people who have never even used a hand plane and who live and work in unimaginably dreary and unpleasant conditions. Why should Larry have all the "fun".
da plane, da plane
Silly boy, the color of those planes clash with your bench. Your best option is to get metal-bodied planes that can be powder-coated to match your bench. Then, send those "pale riders" to me for proper disposal.
Hey, I never said I wasn't silly
: )
Just that I like tools and handmade stuff and in particular hand made tools.
It would be interesting to see what kind of hammer or method the original users of these planes used to adjust the blades.
I am rethinking my plane adjusting hammer shown in the photo. Maybe a hollow, weighted , head out of wood softer than the wood used to make the plane so it doesn't leave marks. As it is now I use the wooden hammer to drive the blade and the wedge but find that an iron headed hammer with plastic pads is best for striking the heel of the plane for backing out the wedge to remove the blade.
From Sears by the way.
I was surprised to find the tenacity with which the blade had become affixed.
PS: I will consider your kind offer to dispose of the pale riders. Don't hold your breath though.
