Bump....
Nope... bad idea.
bump...reason? Or don't I rate that?
am finishing an elec guitar. curly maple. want to do an oil or shellack underbase, followed by nitro laq. Is this ok to do? thanks.
EX,Dewaxed shellac is an excellent base for nitrocellulose. If you start your finishing process with linseed oil, follow that with the shellac before using lacquer.BUT . . .You are decribing a recipe for maple yellowing, big time. Most people DON'T like the look of yellowed maple. I don't mean the attractive amber hue that the new finish imparts, but a decided yellow tone that develops over several years.Over maple, I recommend an acrylic CAB lacquer with its mating sanding sealer. Both go down water white, don't ever turn yellow themselves, and prevent the natual yellowing that maple seems to want to do under other types of finish.Rich
Don't ever learn anything new. Rather than give you satisfaction that you know more than you did, it will only confirm you know less than you thought by opening horizons to things of which you had never dreamt and which you now must explore.
thanks. am planing on dying the maple following r millards recipe. Just wanted to know if I could top with nit. laq. Son Sam, I mean Stevie Vaughn, insistis on a proper finish. Its a tone thing ya know...thanks
Sorry for not having a more elaborate reponse but I did something to my right hand and it hurts.
The waxed shellac would be a problem, but probably not the UNwaxed shellac. As to the BLO, my rule of thumb is that if the solvent is "hotter" than the previous material, don't use it. I really hate having to strip anything, but this might be the case. Also, be careful of nitro lacquers, they are not always the best quality for acheiving a really hard, durable finish. Avoid sanding sealer. Or if you must use it, only one coat, not heavy. Consider a catalized, acrylic or buterate(sp?) lacquer.
There are other solutions to your question, but this is what I have learned over the years...
Sounds like you already know that almost anything will stick to dewaxed shellac.
So, why don't you use that?
Or, why don't you use a sealer designed for NC lac?
I guess if I were Forrest Girl I would get a straight answer... Will ni laq stick to unwaxed shel or blo???
<<<"I guess if I were Forrest Girl I would get a straight answer... Will ni laq stick to unwaxed shel or blo???">>>Well, my friend, she would have received the same response.I'm always amused by people who ask for advice, and then respond with a nasty comment. I will try to spare you in the future.
I concur, nitrocellulose over shellac, blo or even both is fine. Just give the undercoats planty of time to dry first (one day is not enough!).
YES, It is fine to put Laquer over blo. Mater of fact it really makes the wood have a 3d look. But wait three days for the blo to dry and then use the laquer. Also anything will stick to shellac!!!!
<<<"Also anything will stick to shellac!!!!">>>This is true only for dewaxed shellac.
First, please remember that folks are not just sitting here waiting for you to post a question. There is no need to continually "bump" the question. When someone who has an answer signs on, they will get to it.
That said, nitro lacquer will stick just fine to natural (undewaxed) or dewaxed shellac. It will stick just fine to BLO that has dried for 4-5 days.
