I’m looking for a 12 or 13 inch “portable” planer. FWW gives the Delta 22-580 a very good review. So I went shopping for prices online. I can’t find this planer in stock anywhere, but I do find the Delta TP305.
Did the TP305 replace the 22-580? It looks to me like the only real difference is the quick-change cutter heads on the TP305.
Can anyone comment?

I don't think Delta has made a 12" planer for quite awhile now. They have a 12.5" and a 13". The TP305 is the model# of the current 12.5" planer, 1 speed, 2 knives. The 22-580 is the newer 13" 2-speed planer, still has 2 knives (the DeWalt 2-speed has 3 knives).
Ah yes, that helps. Thanks.
They may be replacing it as it in not on Amazon. I had one and it was an excellent planer. Call Delta technical to find the real scoop without speculation.
Sarge..
I will do so, and let you know on here what I find. Thanks.
I called Delta and the rep says they have indeed discontinued the 22-580. He doesn't know why, because it was a good seller. He suggested that maybe certain parts were hard to get.
He said the TP-305 has snipe and the cutter heads don't lock and it's only a single speed. He doesn't consider it any kind of replacement for the 22-580.
The reps have received their second quarter catalogs and there is no 22-580 replacement in it.
I guess I'm off to the Dewalt website to look at the 735.
How about a couple of cases of Popeye spinach and a Lie Nielsen #8? ;-)
I wouldn't over-look the Makita if I were you.
Good luck...
Sarge..
Sarge, I am just now seeing that the Makita 2012NB is a well-respected planer. I am looking closely at it.
Also, the Ridgid 1300LS.
Any input from other owners?
I have a Makita 2012NB that I have used 3+ years and if I were in the market for a portable planer I would not hesitate to buy another Makita. Just wish it was 13 inch.
No problems of any kind so far.

i was told delta is getting out of the benchtop business and will only offer stationary products by the end of 2010.Mark Rhodes

Reeally?! How interesting.
I was thinking this morning about how a company will discontinue a product line and never tell a soul. One day you can't get it and eventually, by word of mouth or e-mail, pretty soon it's common knowledge, and the company still hasn't said a word. Case in point, this 22-580 planer. It seems to be a fairly common industry practice.
Thanks for the heads up, Mark.

"I was thinking this morning about how a company will discontinue a product line and never tell a soul."
It happens all the time as a normal part of many product lines. It is a normal practice to dry out the channel before the introduction, or announcement, of the new product. If they announce a replacement product all of the current product on store shelves and back rooms becomes dead inventory.
No one wants to purchase a product that is missing the improvements without a discount.
Get the big Dewalt. You will be happy

The 735?
Yeah it has three knives and it always wins ffw reviews for a reason. Knives are easy to change. You can buy infeed and outfeed tables that attach to the unit. It has some weight to the machine but if you need an acurate planer set up on the job its the way to go. I set up a whole workshop on the job when I'm doing trim and this planer is one of the first things I set up. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
fww reviews..... sorry big fingers "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Hey, thanks! It sounds like yours has stood up to some good, heavy use.
I have buddies that use one in their shop after using mine. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
I was working in a friends shop when his 20" powermatic went down. We grabed a dewalt 735 at the "box store" and where up and running again. We were both impressed by the finish, and no snipe. Overall a nice portable planer.
I do believe that's the first time I've heard of a Dewalt replacing a Powermatic.
Thanks for the input. I'll almost certainly go with the 735.
It's invaluable to me to have input like this because if I buy the wrong tool I have to live with it, and I'm so new at this that I don't know the pitfalls of the various brands and models. --
"...if I buy the wrong tool I have to live with it, and I'm so new at this that I don't know the pitfalls of the various brands and models." Keep in mind that if you buy the unit at a big-box store, you can return it if it is a disappointment. With the DeWalt, most complaints relate to short life of the blades (may or may not be valid) and the fact that extension tables aren't included. It has excellent chip ejection and is built like a tank! forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG,
That's true. They have the Dewalt 735 at the local Sears. Whatever else there is to be said about Sears, they are good about returns.

I would have a good look at the price.. add the cost of extensions which you need if you run long stock as I do.... then look around at prices for a stationary 15" which used to be about as cheap as what you're going to pay or close. That may not be true anymore as I don't watch prices as I used too but.. worth a look into IMO.
BTW.. 15" come with larger, cast iron tables.
Sarge..
Sarge,
Dewalt 735 is $649, plus $50 for the tables. And that's tables, not extension tables. It comes without tables.
Thanks for the advice, I never would have thought of it.
--Jon
Good luck as if the pricing it right... you won't regret the up-grade to 15". I debated this issue years ago between the lunch-box and 15". I ended up with a 20" as I got it for $1020 new. I don't regret that decision and often need a 40" as in today when I run two 18" panels in and then glue to 36".
How much is enough? As with clamps you always come up one short and 1" short on any jointer or planer regardless of what you have.
Good luck...
Sarge..
I just now went to a couple sites. I will research prices more thoroughly. I can see there would be a lot of advantages to having a 15".
I'll let you know what happens.
--Jon
I am curious as I have not looked carefully at prices in awhile. But.. in lieu of sit by the computer to find out, I will go back to the shop to work on a desk-hutch or my wife will send me. Better to volunteer in this case. :>)
Good luck... and yes.. I would like to know out of curiousity.
Sarge..
you can find it cheaper than 649. Look online. I bought my second one about three months ago and got it for 549. The extension tables are a must. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Hey Home,
I picked up the Dewalt 735 13" for $589.
I couldn't believe it, after looking on the internet for weeks, here it was at my local big box, on sale! I just happened to glance over while walking toward the check-out. The sale had officially ended a couple days earlier and they'd forgotten to take the sticker off one box. That was the box I lugged up to the counter. They couldn't argue with their own sale sticker.
They don't stock the tables for it there, but what the heck.
And, well, I still haven't even plugged it in. I'm knee deep in a couple other priority projects before I can turn my attention to planing. I look forward to it, and thank everyone here for their help and guidance.
Jon
Fantastic. The big stores always forget to take off their sale stickers. Its a great surprise. Yeah when you can get the extensions and you will be all setup. Play around with the machine as soon as you can. My and buddy and I were running blocks of teak and walnut to cedar and popular. Then after you get a feel for the machine and it some what dialed in change the knives out. Dewalt doesn't specialize in sharp knives. Then you will see how nice this machine can operate. Enjoy "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Home,
I will do exactly that with the knives. Thanks!

Dear Jonnie,
I posted this aback in 03. I still have the same planer:
After burning up two Delta single speed planers, I went for the Rigid. Ran material through it, no real improvement over the Delta, but it did seem more substantial. It tended to shatter very thin pieces, so I figured that the blades needed changing. Opened the machine up and the second bolt (allan?) stripped almost immediately. I put the machine back together, got my money back, walked to the "tool coral" and purchased the then new 12 1/2" Delta planer. Less than a year later, I am back at HD without my receipt and a cooked planer, they said no receipt, no deal. Even if they had given me my money back, I was done with HD and Delta planers. I purchased a Makita 12 1/2" planer two years ago from Amazon.com and haven't looked back. You can read my review there. I have had numerous problems with tools bought from HD. IMHO, spend your money elsewhere.
Good Luck!
John
This is my review of the same planer: http://www.amazon.com/Makita-2012NB-12-Inch-Benchtop-120-Volt/dp/B000051ZOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hiqid=1241781870&sr=8-1
Best,
John
Jm,
It was a close race between the 2012NB and the Dewalt. I'd say that the pure dumb luck of finding the Dewalt on sale probably made the final straw vote.
I have heard and read excellent things about the 2012NB. I look forward to your annual update of your review on Amazon. I love that! Don't forget! Ha ha.
Jonnieboy
Dear Jonnie,Thanks!Best,John
I have the 2012NB, it has never gave me a minutes problems in four years. I like Sarge's idea of looking at a 15" floor model. But the only planer I have found that is wide enough for every job is one of these a Planer for any size of panel. Ha,Ha, Well off to the shop to plane some wide panels.
Thats the problem. Your buying tools from HD. Its a proven fact that HD doesn't sell the cream of the crop versions of the tools. You buy a tool from HD and the same exact tool from a tool supplier and the one from HD will have problems out of the box and/or not last as long. Everyone needs to stop looking at the creap prices from HD and stick to their local tool store. It will pay off in the long run. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Dear H,
I agree, to a point. I was DONE a while ago buying tools from HD, but I've seen Delta over the years. What they used to be and what they have become, and unfortunately, I don't think that they measure up anymore. I have found that some companies excel at some tools. For example:1) Makita hand held power planer.... They got it right the first time, back in the 1980s.2) DeWalt... I pretty much have no use for the yellow tools, except that I really like one model of their circular saw. It's heavy, but I like it the best.3) Bosch... best routers.... Period.4) Bosch... best jigsaw under $300.00... period.5) Porter Cable... Tigersaw (Sawzall)... we'll see where they go under new ownership. There are other examples, of course, but these are tools that I own and earn a living with. Delta may end up with B&D, someday and it's really too bad. We were using a vintage B&D router the other day, perhaps 35 or 40 years old. It's big and heavy, but very well made. Now look what they make.............I have no sympathy for them. If a company makes a quality product, people will buy it, look at Festool. I don't own any, but they are obviously gaining market share. If they want to make junk, they won't get my money.Best,John
The point I was making was about the apples to apples comparsion of a tool purchased from HD to a tool purchased from a tool supplier. We can argue all night about what tools we think are the best. I buy the best there is for the specific tool I want and I take care of it. I am not brand loyal. This day and age everyone makes almost every tool. Because of this no one tool manufacturer can master every tool category. My advice use magazine reviews, tool shows and these blogs before buying anything. They give you a great spin around the block before you buy. After that drive on buy HOME DEPOT and pull into your local tool store where they should already know your first name and purchase that tool. Side note there will never be any new deltaportercable tools in my shop or truck ever. Their crap. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Dear H,
I agree completely. WELL SAID!!!(Although I will buy off of the web)Best,John
Yeah you can find some really great deals right now on the web. Especially no shipping costs which is a plus. Also everything comes to you instead of driving around. I love time savers. "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Ooo! Free shipping!
No,... must not... order... Powermat... Too late.
