No More Tipping Trim Router
Hey guys,
Trim routers are great tools, but the base is so narrow that they have the tendancy to tip over when milling edges. While one hand holds the router itself and steers, there is not much room to grab the tool with the other hand to hold it flat. And when holding the narrow base, fingers are too closed to the spinning bit!
So, I made this accessory base plate. I used a piece of 3/8″-thick Plexiglass, about 6″ by 11″. I made it wide enough to give a broader surface, room to place the handles and my hands, but small enough to prevent the Plexiglass from sagging. I used 1/4″ fh. bolts and threaded inserts to install the handles, which are 1-1/4″ hardwood dowels.
Great tool, great base, great tip !

Not too bad, sir.
Nice, I just got one of those to replace my stolen laminate trimmer. I got one of the round bases that fit PC template collars because it was bigger, but I like this idea better.
The next one I will make will accept PC template guides. A little more work, but I think it's worthed.

Serge

Good morning Serge.. Nice little addition you built. I purchased the round base that accepts the templates for mine also. It was around $12 U.S. as there is the Bosch Service Center 9 miles from me here in Atlanta and I went to the counter to avoid shipping.
Your idea of making one to accept the PC templates is a good one. And BTW... the small square base comes in handy in a case or two after I decided to do some modification on the design after assembly so all is not lost with the small square.
Have a good day, my friend...Sarge..

Hey Sarge,
Thanks for your comment. You know, I bought the attached scrap pieces of 3/8" thick Plexi from my local glass store for $10. I was able to fabricate my wide trim router base and my D-handle router base, while I still have plenty of material to fabricate more jigs. I rather build it myself than buying it. By the way, no Bosch service center near here.
I don't know if I'm cheap or imaginative, but for sure I have fun and this is my way of living.
Have a great day too my friend...

As you know Serge.. Forest Girl calls me thrifty... most just call me cheap. Not too many things I don't just build myself but.. I just finished a computer desk-hutch last week and started a hunt table to modify for a fish tank holder today with a table for a printer and shredder after that. So... in this case I called em.. they had several.. 15 minutes and $12 latter I was on the way back to the shop to pick up where I left off.
And I do know you thoroughly enjoy building jigs... I did pop out a few new spring-boards last week on what was supposed to be my 3 day break. I suppose I also enjoy doing them when the truth is told.
Regards... Sarge..

Serge,
I believe in tipping trim routers, but only when the service is exceptional, and no more than 20%.
Ray
20% !!! That's "generous" for such a small performer. At 20% it should serve you quite well.

Serge,
Another good one.
Haven't seen you around too much. It's been a busy summer here so far, even with all the rain. I did manage to paint the house though as one of the projects.
Hope all is well with you,Bob @ Kidderville Acres
A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Hi Bob,
Finally you found time to work on the house. How about the cottage?
I've been On and Off here on Knots lately . I'm working on a twin kitchen hutches project. Perhaps you saw the progress on my website.
Last week I saw my doctor for an annual check-up and he found a cyst on the left lobe of my prostate. He sent me for a consultation with an urology physician for further investigations. We'll see! I keep my fingers crossed it's not cancer. We'll see.
I've been ask to write an article for Lee Valley e-news letter/bulletin. I've been working on that of a couple of days. I hope they will like what I will come up with.
Take care Rob !

Serge,
You have a nice collection of jigs & fixtures, thanks for sharing them with us.

My pleasure Taigert,
As mentionned, I don't want to die with my knowledge. I must pass it on. Not everyone is a believer though!
