To expand on Mike's suggestion with an addition resource, check out Jeff Jewitt's site, Homestead Finishing. I've linked you to his Dye FAQ's but he has a good selection of powder and liquid dies, and an excellent forum in which to ask questions. Your local library might have a good finishing book that discusses the dye techniqe.
