Anyone have any keen ideas for reducing noise in a basement shop? My wife has grown weary of the constant “racket” as she calls it from in the basement. I call it progress, but some battles aren’t worth fighting.
We have a standard block wall basement and all of the main level floors are thin sub-flooring on top of 2×12 rafters spread 14-16 inches apart. Of course, the cheaper the sollution, the better. Thanks for your help.

I guess best solution is sound proofing insulation in the joists, and a good heavy door from basement to next floor up. you might even want to doors, one at the bottmom of the stairs, and one at the top, slowing down dust and noise.
Can you hold the laser level while I shave?
Reducing noise in a basement shop?
Yeah I have a solution. Don't turn on your machines! Set up a workbench, get a few hand tools and you can bust your chops in the middle of the night and no one will ever know. Its worked well for me lo these past 10+ years. We've had three children in that time and no naps have ever been disturbed. The only sound that gets me in trouble is saw filing.

I had the same problem. I put up RSC channel, (a metal spacer- available at any drywall supply store, frequently used in commericial applications) across the joists every 24" or so, then I put up drywall and insulation. The spacers keep the drywall from acting like a drum against the floor above. It cut the tablesaw noise from an annoyance to a minor hum.
If you use a shop vac for dust collection, put it in a soundproofed cabinet (several recent articles). The high frequency pitch of it drives them wild upstairs.
