i have just finished a quilt rack made of red oak and have applied the fist coat of stain. Question is what kind of top coat would provide a non-acid finish. Quilts will draw any acid out of the wood and wreck the quilt according to my 89 yr old mother-in-law. I was thinking of a nice wax finish, I really hate to use varish or poly on my work. Any ideas would be a help.

Shellac does a good job of sealing wood acids away from the fabric and has been recommended by museum conservators for cabinets containing fabrices. Be sure to use seveal coats for best protection. In addition I think I would use low acid tissue to prevent direct contact. Oak is about the worst wood around as far as having troublesome acid in this context. Maple would be much better.
shellac does a good job
Thanks Steve I will test it today.
