   My Kitchen cabinets (not built by me) have the same thing.

   They're available in solid brass. They leave a gap of about 3/32 which for me seems just about right.

   On fancy stuff, I mortise hinges. I feel like I'm cheating otherwise :)

   Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at Woodcraft's non-mortise ball tip hinges, and thought they looked pretty good. I'll go get a set and see how they look. Thanks.I agree that non-mortise hinges seem like cheating... We'll see what I do when I get a set in my hand.Doug

   Nicest (in my opinion) non-mortise hinge I have run across is available from Horton Brass, it's their item number NM-3 available here http://www.horton-brasses.com/products/hinges/butthinges/100.

   Usually disclamers apply, I am only a satified customer of Horton Brass..
