I have a customer who wants their maple butcher block stained. I’ve read alot about non-toxic finishes, can you advise me about non-toxic stains (or dyes) for this application? And what you would finish it with? Thanks. —geoff

Geoff,
I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember reading that virtually all modern finishes are considered safe once they have cured.
I'm wondering what a butcher block would look like stained. I've only seen them oiled after, which they develop a beautiful patina over time. What will a stained surface look like after being subjected to knife cuts?

Jeff, I've also read that virtually all finishes are non-toxic once fully cured, but I don't recall reading anything similar about the stain. Don't some dyes have nasty metals like chrome or lead in them?
I was thinking of finishing with oil after staining. ---geoff
Geoff,
Perhaps an internet search would help. Something like environmentally friendly stains.
