Friends,
Two days ago, I stopped getting email messages notifying me that I had a message on Knots. It turns out that Tony Z and saschafer have the same problem. If that is happening to you, answer this message and the FWW people can keep track of who it has happened to.
The Sysop, Mark Coleman is now working on it.

Me too.
Mel,
I think everyone is having the problem. As an aside, I changed my profile and I got a notification from Taunton, so part of it is working. Maybe pass this on to the sysop.

the notifications stopped for me too
Here also.
It's Mel. He committed a terrible sin! I wish I could tell you more but it's just awful!

Bob,
You mean, you've stopped speaking to Mel, too? I didn't think you'd heard about his transgression.
Ray
Ray,
I'm beginning to be concerned about Mel. Napie told me he was carving pie shells with a chainsaw over on Cooks Talk!

Oh my! I just heard that Mel carved up some cook with a chainsaw! They were having an argument over a pie shell, of all things.
-Steve
P.S. Pass it on.
Steve & Ray,
You're not going to believe this!
I just got a email Notification from some dude named St. Nick. He told me that Mel dropped out of a NASA space ship and was last seen in his woodshop dubbing around on his adze!
According to Samson, this St. Nick fella is a very reliable source!

Bob,
Someone should tell him to get off his lazy adze and get back to work.
Ray
No Bob,
Mel was cooking chainsaw oil, to finish a piecrust table that he'd carved with his adze. That's what Steve told me, anyway.
Ray
No, Mel turned into a kook with chainsaw after a Woodcraft customer complained about a pica sized dot of rust on a Gransfors axe. That's what I heard.
It is the same over at Cooks Talk.
Napie,
What! Mel was over there too? Man he sure gets around.
What was he doing over there, carving pie shells with a chainsaw!?

I am also experiencing the problem.

Also the same at Breaktime

Mel and All,
Got my email at 9:11 pm about messages with replies on the forum. And I opted-out of the email notifications for Taunton sales offers day before yesterday.
Maybe they don't like yall?

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to confirm what Mel reported yesterday and you all are experiencing first hand-- there’s a problem with Knots notifications but smart minds are working to resolve the issue as we speak.
Sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully notifications will be up and running again soon.
Thanks,
Gina

Hey Gina,
If you look around a bit you'll see we are busily entertaining/helping each other thru this traumatic time!
:-)
Have a look at the Jointer - Lie Neilsen discussion going on. Mel's out to set a new record!
Happy Holidays to all the folks @ Fine Woodworking too!

I can't believe you have time to get on Mel for missing messages?? I thought all the Knotters would be wondering what you where doing?? Maybe looking at videos? Hope that Hershel has been fun?
Dan
Hi Dan,
It's been really slow around here. I spent 77 hours searching Knots for someone to chastise and had no luck! Then Mel posted that he used some mechanical/powered whatchmacallit on one of his bowls.
Right after that as I was sharpening my Pfeils a bolt of lightning struck me in the head and a voice from above said,"Bob, Mel has sinned and I am appointing you to dispense the punishment". My dispenser was broken by a diseased Yak from Tibet so I had to resort to the computer. The keyboard got away from me! It has a mind of its' own at times.........................
That Hershel is absolutely incredible! I watched the first DVD of him making a rifle and was simply amazed at his skills. He cuts the blank to rough size using measurements that boggle the mind. The straight edge is moving all over the place!
He puts/makes a lot of the hardware and puts it on the rifle, including making the patch box from scrap pieces of brass! Then he takes it to the bandsaw and freehands it to size. On top of all that he uses a Stanley Shurform and starts shaving and smoothing the wood! If I tried that I'd at least make a mess of the hardware.
He obviously has a tremendous amount of skill. I dare say not a single woodworker wouldn't be amazed watching him! And, his shop is a mind blower, not to mention the power tools that he uses. That shaper scares the be jesus out of me just looking at it! And his hands/fingers are so close to the head, with no guards in site!
Also watched several Roy flicks, great stuff. The wife told me that he's on TV Saturday mornings too. I work in the AM so have deployed the DVR to capture it for me.
This weekend I'm having several fellow woodmunchers over for a viewing of the VHS tapes. Should be a great time. Venison stew, homemade salsa with chips, some Chex party mix and a LaBatt or several..............

Bob that's about the way its done by most of the guys who don't buy their buttplates and things from suppliers. I don't make my barrels- that's just too hardcore and the quality of the barrels today from Rice, Colerain and Getz is so good I just don't think I could ever achieve that level of quality. Not to mention time.
Its hard not to enjoy Hershel. He's so full of enthusiasm and he's such an innovator, you can't help but like his stuff. You can learn so much on technique that you could use in other woodworking areas. His use of pewter/plumbers babbit is something I have used on lots of non-rifle projects- its just so easy and it looks good.
Keep going and see the CW tape. That is the beginning of the revival.
You probably have a local library that can get books from the library over in Derby Line. The book you would enjoy is Foxfire 5. It has some early builders and some great reading. HH as a 21 year old upstart.

Dan,
Just watching that guy causes thoughts to flow. He is probably the most inspiring woodworker I have ever seen. It's quite obvious that he has a lot of experience in what he does.
And that woodshop is mind blowing! I mean you can see light passing through the boards!
Our weekend viewing of the tapes got postponed. It seems like Mother Nature had other plans for everyone! We got over a foot of snow and the wind was blowing @ 20-40 mph with a temp of 10°. Buuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Great stuff! I really owe you one for letting me borrow them.

Gina,
Thanks for checking on this, and for getting the gears moving. I really appreciate what you and Betty and Paula did. Please tell Betty and Paula that I said thank you. When this is over, it is possible that the denizens of Knots will have a songwriting contest: for the best song with the title "Gina, Betty and Paula". Of course, we may have to rearrange the order of the names to get optimal rhymes. :-) Have fun.

Gina, thanks for updating us on the problem. Maybe you can help with something else (I wrote an email yesterday morning, no response yet): Where on this page or some other Taunton or Knots page, does one go to change email notifications about things like offers, newsletters, etc.?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Forestgirl,
This is Mel, not Gina, but Gina's sidekick Betty took me through that just two days ago. To change your preferences,
1) go into Knots.
2) look at a line just about the first message, which is in red and is just below the header. It contains five or six categories. On of them is "My Forums". Click on it
3) Then on the left, you will see "Preferences". Click on it.
4) You are there.Hope that helps.

FG,
Next time Taunton sends you an email with "offers" there is an opt out link at the bottom. It will bring you to a page that allows you to check/uncheck which notices you receive.
Lee
Hi, Lee. Yeah, I already opted out using that link, but at least one person here at Knots was trying to find the route to take from here. It's not at all apparent, and I had forgotten about My Forums where it is hidden.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Forestgirl,
In the bottom of each email you receive you should see the following message - “You received this message because you are a <!----><!----><!---->Taunton<!----><!----> customer or have registered at Taunton.com. This email was sent to you by The Taunton Press. Click here to update your email preferences.”<!----><!----><!---->
<!----> <!---->
If you click on the Click here text it will bring you to your email preference page. You can select or unselect what types of email you would like to receive on this page. If you have any problems doing this please let me know. Thanks!<!----><!---->

Thanks, Mary, I've got it now. I had already used my email link to change peferences. What I was asking about, and a Knots member tried to help with, is how to change preferences by navigating from Knots. By going through My Forums we can opt in or out for the eNewsletter, but I see nowhere to opt in or out for offers.
So, am I correct in thinking that opting out of offers can only be done by using the link in the Taunton email?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Yes! You are correct. Opting out of offers can only be done by using the link in the Taunton email.
Well, I got a message notification a little while ago, so maybe it's working again.
However, I noticed that Taunton's computers appear to still be on Daylight Savings Time.
-Steve
Steve,
I have also started getting notifications again. They'll get the time right soon. Things are looking up.

I'm not getting messages.
Willy,
I just started getting the notifications of messages again. Have yours started coming yet? They definitely are working on the problem.
