I picked up 2 old woodworker vises at a garage sale for $5. Now I want to see if I can actually use them. The casting has a small “GG” and “SF1” (no other markings, although I didn’t disassemble it yet).
I did not get the bench mount. I can create a suitable bench bracket out of wood reinforced with metal, but I am stuck on how to find a “nut” that I can weld to a metal plate [or ????].
The screw seems to be 1 inch in diameter, and the outside edge of the guide bars are 7″ apart. Suggestions?

A machine shop can make you one, but it will most likely cost more than the vice is worth.
It's probably an Acme thread or Buttress if it was once a rapid vice...maybe even square thread.
Look for Acme nut or Buttress nut on the internet.
you should be able to find the nut at McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/
They have a full line of Acme threads. Just type "threaded rod" into their search engine.
Another place you could try is Fastenal. There is probably a branch near you -- there almost always is. They will have every fastener made: http://www.fastenal.com/
Another choice is Grainger: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/start.shtml/ , though you generally have more trouble getting them to sell to the public (no problem if you are a business owner). The other two are not a problem, you can just set up and account and buy.
Cheers,
Eric
