Greetings folks –
New to this forum; first time here.
I would like to find a Ø3/16 shell and/or lamp auger around 20-24″ long. I’m having a difficult time locating one. I’ve e-mailed a lot of different woodworking/wood lathe tool sites and a couple of them pointed me in this direction.
If no one knows where to buy one, could anyone tell me who might be able to make me one?
Thanks in advance –
Mike

I have no idea.. I'd look under gun barrel boring tools???
Actually, my area of expertise is metal working. I have been in design and fabrication of metal for over 25 years.I contacted a machine shop about gundrilling the wood I need bored. Gundrilling produces a clean, straight, long bore in metal, but does not work very well in any type of wood. How gundrilling works is cutting fluid is forced under high pressure from the tip of the gundrill as it works. A gundrill is a fancy little bit of business. It is a spiral fluted drill bit - but each flute has a spiral hole the length of the bit. How they make them is interesting, but basically the twin holes are put in the drill bit material first, then the bit material is heated and twisted to the pitch of the flutes, then the flutes are machined and the bit is heat treated.Anyway, my guy told me he has tried gundrilling wood before. It works but the wood gets saturated with the cutting fluid that is used under pressure. Not what I want. Thanks for the advice; it's good to be here.MikeEdited 10/15/2005 8:17 pm ET by Waterpourer

A bit larger than you wanted but might be of interest. You might want to get Mike Darlows WoodTurning Methods. Great info on drilling and other esoteric lathe stuff. I'm not really into turning but I had to get this book. He also talks about modifying an auger bit into a shell type bit with some grinding. We do a fair amount of deep drilling in timbers for timber framing (11' holes from 2 sides os it's a 5-1/2' hole) and have been talking to some gun drill people. They can grind a modified tip for wood. I've found references to people using gun drills for flutes and such so it's got possibilities. No fluids are used. Get Darlows book...great stuff on eccetric turning, therming and things you won't find in any other book on turning.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks, Duke, you're a peach. I have looked at their website, and I think it looks very promising. I have already sent them an email and I'll give them a call on Monday.Once again, thanks!Mike

Welcome
You may find that a shell auger of 3/16 is getting pretty fine. However if you don't find one they are reasonably easy to make if (especially if you are able to get one of a different size to copy). Use Silver steel round bar of the desired diameter & grind a gouge like flute down the bar. It is probable that you will have to pull it out to clear frequently if the flute is a short one. If you have many holes to bore you might get one fabricated.

Welcome Waterpourer,
This is a great place. I'm glad Duke could help you. This is the caliber of wood workers that post here. I try to read all post and even comment when I have the knowledge, too.

Is it really saw dust or wood dust?
Water, can you tell us what it is that you are making-it may be possible to achieve the same result without actually boring a hole.
It is reasonably difficult to drill a hole that diameter and length down the centerline of a part.
I would suggest you use a different technique.
