Anybody know an easy way to get rid of the burn marks on oak. I’m doing a fireplace mantel, and I’ve routed out some pilanters (spell?), and there are router burn marks where I stopped the bit.
My fingers are too big to get in there with sandpaper……….maybe have to get my daughter to do it?
A dremel maybe?

Slow that sucker down, if you can. If it is a smaller bit it doesn't need all those rpms.
ALL wood will BURN sometimes.. Maybe you can sand it out OR another pass with the saw/router.. Just a 'kiss' fast as ya can!
Never stop cutting while the router bit is spinning on the piece. This will guarantee a burn every time. You'll need to use a different approach.
I'd be real careful using a Dremel, very difficult to use in moderation. What shape is the area you need to squeeze into and sand? Use or make something with that shape, with a piece of sandpaper laid over/around it. For instance, with a v-shaped area, you could use a plastic wedge with paper wrapped around it.
For "the next time" yes, work on technique, pulling the stock away from the bit in a smooth movement. Any "resting" in one place is going to give you those burn marks.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

A couple times I've used the actual router bit (out of the router) as a scraper to remove some burning. It's already the perfect profile - it's just holding it that's tricky.
Neat tip. It does work as I have also tried it. Consider posting this tip in the "Tip & Techniques" section.
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
