I am restoring an oak machinists tool chest, which I am guessing might be somewhere around 75 years old. The lable (decal?) on the front reads Union Tool Chest Co, Inc., Rochester, New York. There are no other identifying marks on the chest. A web search of the company name reveals nothing, and I am afraid to sand off this name plate before I am sure I will be able to locate a replacement. Has anyone ever heard of this company, or have any thoughts on where I might get information on its whereabouts, if indeed it is still in existance?
Thank You!

I don't know for sure that Union is defunct, but if they were still in business I would have expected to see new chests, or ads for new chests, or catalog listings or eBay auctions of new chests, sometime in the last 25 years, and I haven't.

Unless my brain is malfunctioning, I have a similar chest from Union that belonged to my grandfather. He would have bought it in Chicago between 1912 and 1964.
I neglected to answer your first question. I have indeed heard of Union. You can see their tool chests pretty regularly on eBay. As I implied in my first post, I strongly doubt that they are still in business under the same name, or still making tool chests under any name.
But all is not lost. If you can get a good picture of the label, or download a good picture from eBay (doubtful), it is possible to make custom decals. Another alternative would be to leave the label and a patch of unsanded original finish around it and make a smooth transition between that patch and the new finish on the rest of the board.
The union tool company was bought out by stanley a long time ago, they made planes, measuring tools ,chisels, tool chests etc. and were a very strong competitor against Stanley in the early 1900"s.I still have some Union tools and they are every bit 1st rate, probably why Stanley bought them out.
Thank you for this information. It is the most specific I have heard yet. This evening I wrote to the Rochester Historical Society in the hopes that they may have an example chest in their possession of which I can take a photograph of the label and have it reproduced.
Appreciate your assistance.
