I have an old French oak wine barrel that I was able to get from a winery in Sonoma a few years back. I have had it outside in the elements and I just brought it in so that I can sand it down and re-finish it. I would like to keep it outside in the future (maybe just bring it in during the winter) and was wondering what the best finish would be for this barrel. I want something that is water repellent. Any ideas?

No finish is required. If you want the outside to look nice you will need to re-apply a finish every year or so. Never finish the inside (assuming you can get to the inside) especially if you will be using it for its intended purpose (!).
