I want to hook up my dust collection vaccuum to my hand-held Makita sander, but the dust port isn’t round – it’s oval (!) Has anyone dealt with this effectively? Is there an oval-to-round adapter, or will I need to make something up? Much appreciation for any suggestions offered…

I think everybody will agree that standards are pretty much non-existant as far as dust collection goes.
Duct tape and imagination
You might check on the Makita web site for an adapter. With ever increasing attention to dust collection, seems likely they will have something.
Flexible Hose
My Fein Vac came with a small piece of flexible hose. It adjusts to odd shapes without problems. No duct tape required.
You can shape PVC drain pipe with a heat gun. You can stretch it if you make a suitable tapered plug to stretch it on. I've don this for my tools and it works reasonably well. Jou can always wtap some tape around the male part of the fitting to take up any slack.
No-hub connections
I've used the rubber centers from no-hub connections in the plumbing section.
Even cut a few for those odd-sized oval shaped ports.
Doubled up (thickness) overlapping the seams, with some rubber cement these have held up for several years now.
I thought of this after using a old bicycle tube to stretch over a small orbital sander port.
I like it! Thanks.
Find the Mean
If you measure side to side and add that to the top to bottom dimension, divide by two and that should give you your mean diameter. go to McMaster.com and order yourself a piece of flexible hose and heat if nescessary to conform it to the tool.
