It just makes me sick to think of how many peoples lives have just been wrecked by this storm, and know that it is likely to be a very long time before most will be able to get their insurance settled, and shops re-built while being out of work etc.
I am in Little Rock Ar. and have more space than one man deserves to have for shop space. I would like to help someone who lost their shop and tools by offering to let them work in part of my shop while they put things back together.
I know those needing help most probably don’t have access to this forum right now, but maybe some of your friends from down there have been in touch. I would like to have some referrals, and qualify some level of compatibility.

Nice offer. I am pleased to say that I received an email from corporate and they wrote a check to the Red Cross for $250k. They also incented the employees to donate via a special website and will match employee contributions up to another $250k. With 40,000 employees it will only take $6.25 per head. Those of us with day jobs, especially at big corporations, should urge them to do the same. Just tell them Bechtel did it and so should we.

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.

I would call the RED-CROSS and ask them.. Or some other charity of your choice.. They may have have a idea.. But one out of a city? Well, it is a GOOD START!
Thanks for your help...

http://www.hurricanehousing.org/host.html?id=There are so many people who need help, and I hate to say it, but our Government is incapable of dealing with this. They have failed to deal with the immediate needs of a tremendous number of people. Those people have never needed a friend to help as badly as they do right NOW. They need a safe place to lay their head, they need to take a bath, they need a phone to contact family or friends, they will need work if they can get it. I know they need someone to talk to, maybe someone to tell their stories to, someone to hear their complaints and to make them heard. If you can do any of this you may find the greatest friend that you could ever have.
Try to think of a way that you can help.I have posted my offer on several forums, but have had no takers. Perhaps it is too early.
Keith, I applaud you. Even if no one takes you up on your offer, it's the fact you opened up your business to try and help someone in need.CERF, would be a good way to help, they help Artists and Galleries that have been damaged and are unable to generate income.Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
Hi Earl, The top of the two links above is CERF. How did you come out in this one. You got some weather from this over there in Pensacola also didn't you? Did you know other shops over to your West in the worst hit area? I have not had any responses to my offer, and have been in touch with other friends that are mobilizing to help those with more commercial operations. I will provide a link to it as soon as I can find it.Good to hear from you, and hope you are doing well. K
We came out very good on this one. I was really nervous about Katrina, when Ivan hit last yr it veered east, from that area, to hit us. So we boarded up and had our supplies just in case. We just lost one more tree and a few shingles, nothing major. Big problem now is getting gas here. We are probably going to lose some income, my wife does lots of work for the MS Billfish Classic that they run out of Isle Of Capri Casino. Looks like they won't have one this next yr.I really don't know any woodworkers over there in MS and NO, but the machinery sales co here in town sells to a lot of people over that way. I heard of one big cabinet co that was under water. If you want I can give you Bob's # he may know someone and or can put the word out for you. He could also be an asset in screening someone, he knows quite a few people over there. Just email me.Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
To all,
I have a friend who lives close to DC(in Harper's Ferry, West Va.) who would like someone out of work to stay in his house and work there on several houses, including the one that they will be living in while things are recovering from the damage. I don't know any particulars about the pay, but he has volunteered to help. How would he find out about anyone that is looking for work for the next nine months while New Orleans is pumped dry, etc.? I can't imagine FEMA would have a listing of the misplaced families.

B, At the present these look like the best that I have found, although I have a friend working on one just for cabinetmakers that is not up and running. I will post it here ASAP.

http://www.hurricanehousing.org/host.html?id=After a couple of days, I am sorry to report that I still do not have a taker for my offer. It may still be a bit early for the refugees to gain access to a computer.
I doubt that the Red Cross has had time to start linking people, from being overwhelmed with the evacuation.
Keith,
Thanks for your response. I did not intend on taking over your thread. Good luck and God bless you for trying to help someone in need.

Bill, don't worry about it, I think it is good to keep this thread alive or else it will drop off of the list of active discussions. I still have not had anyone respond to my offer, and I have it on 4 other forums. I don't know if the people whom I would like to help just don't know how to use the internet, or if it is just too early or what.
Keith, most people are still recovering from a state of shock. It'll take at least 2-3 wks before people realize they've got to get back to work. At least that was the way it was here with Ivan. That and getting on the internet is the last thing on their mind. More concerned with getting power and water, if they still have a house.Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
I am deeply disappointed in my corp. Not only have they NOT helped Katrina victims, they didn't raise a finger for the Tsunami either. While I do see some irony in the American Ambassador's request that Canada send plywood and lumber to help rebuild (Softwood Lumber?? Are they going to charge tarrifs?) I also see the need for humanitarian aid.
I will be leaving this corp next week and this is only one of the factors in my decision. How can a company that specializes in exporting Engineering knowledge let two major catastrophies that desperately point out the need for advanced engineering pass without so much as a blink.

(Softwood Lumber?? Are they going to charge tariffs?) .. LOL.. LOL.. GOOD ONE.. I'd bet WE do not! USA here...Been to Toronto MANY times in my travels... Nice folks.. Even your Customs folks sort of nice.. Not at all like the ####....s we have here..I'd think the USA should be able to take care of ourselves..Canada should not have to pay part of the bill...I will be leaving this corp next week .. I wish you good luck and sometimes it's for the best..
