I’m in the planning stages of building an office desk and shelves. I need advice on the following:
- A good supplier of cabinet grade plywood, maple faced. I live in Connecticut and I think an internet supplier may be best but I don’t know.
- A good book that has plans etc. I will probably modify them but a good starting point is always helpful.
- A book on finishing. I don’t have a high tech place to finish projects so I think I am restricted to a brush finish.
Thanks

danpants, Welcome to Knots!
I can't help you on a maple plywood supplier. I'm on the left coast and my supplier carries 19 different types of maple plywood (OK, 3 or 4 are shop grade, but still...). It really helps to go look at it all to be able to understand the difference - worth the drive if you can find a supplier within a reasonable distance from you.
Depends on the situation; I've been very happy with the prefinished for the interiors & shelves on my kitchen cabinets. It has a sealer and 2 coats of clear UV-cure epoxy - looks great and very tough. Exterior panels I've gotten raw and finished to ensure they look the same as the other parts.
The kitchen project was big enough to pay for a spray rig. I wanted to keep a light look but with a bit of depth so used a seal coat of 2# cut shellac (Zinsser SealCoat) with two coats of clear finish. I really like the shellac and would recommend you look into that.
I got some great designs out of a Taunton book at the library - includes the design details, cut lists and illustrated build and assembly instructions. I believe the work Desk is somewhere in the title.
Good luck, and be sure to post pictures of the results!

Thanks for the response Wayne. I'll look into the library and the pre-finished plywood. I think the pre-finished is a good alternative for me. I will also make my wife happy, she is very sensitive to smells and finishing a desk in the basement will push her limits.
Thanks
Dan
Where are you in CT? Here is a link to a Hardwood/plywood supplier that I use http://www.cwghardwoodoutlet.com they are in Enfield.
Also some regular lumberyards will special order maple ply, my local yard will order A-1 face maple ply, it is not cheap but saves me a ride!!!

Hi Mike
I live in Guilford CT. which is on the coast about 15 min. east of New Haven. I didn't think about ordering through the lumber yard. I'll give them a call. Thanks for the response.
