I am planning on building a cabinet structure along the length of two adjoining walls in my office. On top of the cabinet will be shelves. I’ve been combing my books but have not been able to find suggeted measurements for this particular project. I’d like to know what the appropriate height for the cabinet should be. Should it be the same height of a desk, seems kind of low to me. I was tentatively planning on making it the height of a kitchen counter top 36″, for lack any specific plans.
Regarding the forstner bits, anyone have advice on how to keep them from overheating and loosing the temper? I have my drill press at the lowest rpm, but yet I still managed to fry a 1/4″ bit on soft maple with very little use? It’s high speed steel too.
Thanks,
David P.

Lista tool cabinets are 41-3/4" or 59-3/4" high. Stanley Vidmar cabinets are 33", 44", or 59". Kennedy are 35", 43", 53", or 62". Lyon are 27-1/4", 32-1/4", 44-1/4", or 59-1/4". Equipto are 29", 33-1/2", 44", or 59". All these courtesy of the MSC catalog.
Are you going to have drawers in the cabinets, or shelves and doors, or some combination? How much stuff do you have that you want hidden, compared to the amount of stuff you want on open shelves?
Lots of desk height work space would be very attractive to some people, but in my office it would just get covered up with piles of stuff that should be on shelves or in drawers.
I guess what I'm saying is decide what you want the cabinets to do and let that guide your design, rather than starting out with how you want it to look.
Thanks UD, they are going to have doors only. What is the MSC catalog please?

MSC Industrial Supply. Their catalog is 4000+ pages of mostly metalworking tools, machinery, and supplies. They have a web site, http://www.mscdirect.com but I find it very difficult to use. You can use the web site to get the 800 number, which you can call for a free copy of the catalog.
I cited the tool cabinets because the heights of all five brands clustered around four values that people seem to have found useful. All of them have drawers rather than doors.
