I have been using Sutherland Wells Tung Oil Varnish for ~ 10 years and in the past I have been quite pleased. I work with solid Cherry and Mahogany and more recently hardwood veneer plywoods.
In the past I have lightly thinned the first coat, steel wool in between coats, and have been able to brush on a light coat or wipe on and still retain gloss in the final finish. I have always been careful to let the finish dry 72 or more hours.
With the last gallon I bought I have repeatedly experienced Flashing, where even after 2 weeks dry time I cannot maintain a gloss unless I only wipe on very thin coats.
Could anyone let me know of any positive experiences with oil based varnish that are brushable, and if anyone has used Murdoch’sâ„¢ Resin Line which is made by Sutherland Wells.
Thanks in advance for your help,
–Simon

Simon,
Personally, I don't use Sutherland products . If you think there is a problem with the product, you should contact the supplier or company.
I would suggest that you give a light sanding between coats as opposed to steel wool. Sandpaper with flatten the surface, the wool will conform to it.
What type of steel wool are you using? If it is too oily, it will easily interfere with the finishing process. This could be the crux of your problem.
For a good brushable varnish (to name a few)
Behlen Rockhard
Pratt and Lambert
McCloskey
Good luck.
