I am working on a dead blow mallet I found in a 2006 fine wood working magazine, and it calls for Minwax Antique Oil Finish. I’m new to woodworking, and would like to try and reproduce, as close as possible, the mallet shown in the plans, but I can’t get Minwax Antique Oil Finish in California, something to do with environmental protection. I was hoping someone might have a recipe for a finish nearly the same as the Minwax. Thanks.

Look for other oil and varnish mix finishes. You could also order on line and have it shipped to you. It is sold in big box stores everywhere (except California, it seems). It is a lovely finish. I use it regularly. JL
lancet,
Minwax' "Tung Oil Finish" is exactly the same thing. (Yes!) (It's really a linseed oil, varnish, solvent mix) Is that available where you are?
If not, a mixture of 1. Boiled Linseed Oil, 2. mineral sprits (use low odor) or naphtha, and 3. an oil varnish or polyurethane varnish, mixed together in about equal volumes (it's not at all critical - a little light on the linseed and varnish is just fine) will work just as well.

I just picked up some Tung Oil Finish yesterday, and tryed it out on some scraps, it looks great, thanks for the help.
Glad to.
