I have a jewelry box made of cherry, with false fingers made of ebony (triangular shapes, all sides end grain). What kind of oil finish will both enhance the woods beauty, while emphasizing the contrast between the face-grain cherry and end-grain ebony?

I like to use boiled linseed oil. I just wipe in on and after about 20 minutes wipe off any excess. Let that dry for 4 or 5 days and do it again. After you let it dry for a couple of weeks or longer put on whatever finish you are planning on using. Poly, Shellac or whatever. Try it on some scrape, I think you'll like it.

*I have done several pieces out of cherry and find that Tung oil brings out the beauty of cherry wonderfully! It is good for sealing the wood as well! A few coats of wax and you're on your way! As a side note, I haven't tried the boiled linseed oil, but I think I just may have to on my next project.
*I have used tung oil on several boxes with great luck. The drying time is much less than linseed oil and I think the finish is better. I have used tung oil with many types of wood including cherry, maple, bubinga and paduk with good results.Best o luck.
