I have an unfinished red oak bench that has acquired several clear oily spots of unknown origin. I need to try to remove those prior to finishing and am wondering what mechanical and/or chemical tactics might be the best bet. Thanks in advance!

You might try using acetone. I refinished a sausage bench one time and had to scrub it repeatedly with acetone to get the grease out. Even mineral spirits might work.
*Cheap lacquer thinner. Lots of it. Slosh it on, and wipe off. Wearing the right type of chemical resistant gloves I also find is a good idea. Sliante.
