Building in a new storage cabinet using “mahogany” doors salvaged from our owld home. Facing on the frame is ribbon stripe mahogany ply with mahogany door frames (milled by me). The problem is that the doors, after stripping, revealed themselves to be luan (sp?–i.e. Phillippine “Mahogany”)and, while having a nice ribbon pattern, is a dirty yellow-brown while the paneling and frames are redish. Problem, how to get a similar finish on both?
So far have tried oxalic acid on the doors since they are the darker. Maybe a bit lighter but still brown against the red paneling. Trying both a cherry and a red oak stain on a bleached sample did not cut it, still brown, just darker and even a more obvious mis-match, even with both diluted in several steps. Basically, the doors are still way too dark.
After scanning the other posts here, is the two part bleach the answer? Or is there a dye that color I should try on the doors to give them more of a reddish hue and less of a yellow brown one?
I would really like to keep the ribbon stripe real mahogany paneling as natural as possible.
Thanks

Quite a bit of discussion about the various types of bleach in "Great Wood Finishes" by Jeff Jewitt. Extensive discussion also about dyes, stains, and altering colors.
