Old Boring Finish Question and a Hello
Hello fellow wood butchchers! New guy here so first want to say hello and I am glad to find this forum. I am sure to learn something here. I am new to furniture and furniture making. I have made many many different things over the years. My father used to make solid body electric guitars as well as acoustics and mandolins and I used to go with him to his little shop and butcher wood scraps. I made a drum and drumsticks. I am an amature bowyer. I also make wooden doughbowls, hand hewn with two small handadze I buy from a blacksmith in NC. My real passion is small wooden boats and building them. I am on hiatus from boatsbuilding at the current time but am in the planning stages of a 17′ wooden flat bottom skiff that is surely going to be a gem of a skiff, designed by who are surely the master designers of flat bottom skiffs, William and John Atkin.
So anyway, my question: I am building the wife (and me) some A&C furniture and have fumed one piece so far and am very, very pleased with the result. However, the wife is not so you all know what that means. I have read about a finish intended for A&C ( read Stickley ) furniture using Mosers water based lt Sheraton mahogany dye, Linseed oil, followed by Lilly Ind. warm brown glaze. The glaze and the company who sold it are no longer available. So, it was suggested by several sources to buy Valspar Professional warm brown mahogany glaze and an item number was given though I do not recall that right now. But, when I went to Lowes and asked the guy for that item he said that he showed no such item number nor could I find it. What exactly am I after here? Do I need the tintable glaze and have it mixed? If so, where to I find the color mixing information? Is there another product out there that I can substitute for the valspar glaze or is my information about Lilly industries wrong and they are still in business? Finally, how am I to apply the glaze for best results? I am after that deep red/dark, deep brown/red finish, I am sure you all know what I am wanting, well, what SHE is wanting, well, I like it too but am happy with the fuming and linseed oil but……
Well, like I said, I am happy to be here and thanks in advance for any help or advice.

You might try putting a copy of your question down in the Finishing Discussions section. There are some very knowledgable folks that seem to hang out there.
