Old Craftsman table saw (1940’s?) 1/2″
Hey All,
A friend gave me an old, old table saw that can only accomodate an 8″ blade. I spent hours removing rust, cleaning, making the fence as true as possible. Then I went to put a blade on. The arbor is only 1/2″. Does anyone know of any resources for blades with this arbor or a spacer to fill the gap?
Thanks,
Bill

The reducer bushings are fairly easy to come by. The local hardware store has them in blister packs next to the saw blades.
Amana lists them on their website, bu-110.
Amazon, for $8 per 10, http://www.amazon.com/Vermont-American-27974-Replacement-Bushings/dp/B0002YTXGG/ref=sr_1_9/103-4931015-3438221?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1192760584&sr=8-9
You might be surprised how many of those saws are still chugging away. If you ever feel like sinking a little money into a good fence, these from Mule Cabinetmaker might help you out. Several old-Craftsman owners have posted about adding one to their saws. Your post caught my eye because I had a slightly newer version of that saw for a short while.
Look among most circular saw blades. You'll find some with "Knock out"
Spacers that convert the blade for just the arbor your saw has.
The same knockout can be used for all blades, so you needn't buy 10 of them Steinmetz. If you want to do superior work on that saw, invest in a carbide toothed blade . They outlast plain blades and can be reground many times Steinmetz.
Gotups97,
Looks like you've got the information you need regarding the blade. However, if you are interested in more information about your old saw, check out http://www.owwm.comm and http://www.owwm.org. Great sites for those interested in using/restoring old woodworking machinery. They have histories on numerous companies, including Craftsman. They have lots of photos and lots of "dirty paper", reprints of original instructions and data sheets in .pdf format that you can download. You might find something pertaining to your saw.
Good Luck,
Bill
You can probably get a Forrest Woodworker !! 8" blade custom-drilled for a 1/2" arbor. Call them on Monday and ask. 800-733-7111.
I have one of these saws and it came with a lot of blades and a 1 horse motor. I use it to cut smaller pieces with a carbide blade. I have seen lots of 1/2" arbor blades on the net but I haven't bought any. I also have a molding cutter for it but I always use my router table to do that.
I am one of those who put a Mule Cabinetmaker on a 10" Craftsman table saw and the performance is very accurate. I just bought 2 more 10" saws for $60 and I am ready to get them up and running. These saws go pretty cheap at auctions and I think that people just don't appreciate how well they were built. There is a lot of cast iron there and my saw consistently outperforms a friend's newer aluminum top saw. Old arn rules!
