Hi,
I’m thinking of bidding on this old Delta jointer:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3818932912&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 . I know the bed looks really short but if the price was right do you think it would be worth it? That solid cast iron has to be better than some of the imported crap you see today.
Thanks for your opinions.

Darren,
I think you'll be frustrated with that unit...unless your just jointing small pieces. Perhaps you could extend the bed length with a structure that was coplaner with the cast iron bed, but then how would you raise and lower it with the cast iron bed...frustration. I get more functionality out of a thick plank on the base of my planer and face joint my boards that way...
I have had one of those for several years. It was made in 1946. The bed is 32" overall, and it works fine for edge jointing pieces up to 5 or 6 feet long. For the few times I have needed to edge joint longer pieces, I just used a plane for final adjustment.
I got a good deal on a long bed jointer a while back, so I don't need the little jointer any more. I'd sell it for $150 if anyone wants it. It's in Kansas City.
I wouldn't have kept it for ten years if it weren't a pretty good little jointer.

Sounds like a nice joiner and all the restoration has been done. You can always make some extention tables for long stock. They have to be flat and in line but my little six inch edges 12 footers easily.
Darren,
I'd let it go. The price is already too high IMHO and that bed is really short! I think you can easily find a 6" Delta or other solid brand for $100 if you keep your eyes open and get a longer bed in the bargain.
Regards,
Mack
