My wife wants me to build an old-english style table for our breakfast nook. The table should look dark and grainy and look like its covered with 20 coats of poly. I want it to look as if a pirate was sitting there asking the bar wench to get him another pint of ale. I’m clueless can anyone help.

Sounds like you may want to look at examples of Jacobean furniture. I don't know about the 20 coats of poly part. This style was characterized by heavy oak. Originaly the wood was split and worked with fairly crude tools. There is a good picture of such a table on the start page of this site.

Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Lostsoal,
Hammers suggestion is a good one for the table, finding a good bar wench is a bit challanging these days...ya might try 'Hooters'.
Your wife probably wants a thick slabed table that is just waxed (wax with stain), breadboard ends, and, depending on your breakfast nook dimemsions, either a single or double pedestal.

This could be a table that strikes her fancy. It's an Old English hayrake stretcher table. It was in FWW #48, pgs 72-75. All done in heavy white oak timbers. Massive table. If I remember right the top was made up with three 13" wide QS white oak slabs. If it sounds interesting I can dig out the magazine, scan a pic, and send to you. lost arrowBe not afraid of going slowly. Be afraid only of standing still. chinese proverb
