My name is dusty and I am an old iron junkie , I’ve had my eye on a friends old Davis and Wells long bed jointer for many years and he decided he was ready to sell it to me .
It’s quite heavy for it’s size and has only a 6″ cutterhead and a 63″ bed , it purrs like a kitten , and joints nicely as well .
here are a few pics

Nnniiiiccce Jointer Dusty. I'd be pleased to have that thar critter in my shop too.
Enjoy, Chris.
Hi Chris ,
Even though we see those to die for 12 and 16" old Olivers , Northfields and the likes I have used a 6" jointer with a much shorter bed for the last 30 years with little problem .
Personally I don't face joint much at all , most all the materials I use come in surfaced to some extent .

Dusty,
My 18" Rikon BS is my jointer and planer for the moment, until I can afford or come across a good deal on a jointer and planer. But then again, all I 'm doing there is taking 4x8 rough cut basswood and turning it into carving blocks. Any other project I have to get out the handplanes.
Enjoy your new toy... Oh, didn't we discuss radial drill presses a little ways back? I went to Grizzly's last Saturday and decided to get their floor model. Nice toy!!!
I guess we're both happy campers eh?
Chris
Chris , Congrats on the new drill press , I'm sure you will find many advantages to the radial feature , I know I have . Just being able to drill in say 15" from the edge is handy .
dusty
BTW , I just happen to have a nice old jointer for sale , it won't take up too much floor space and it works perfect .
Hey Dusty,
Thanks and OOOOO yea, I've been having fun getting to know my new machine, and what a fine piece of equipment it is too. I'm rather impressed with it.
You just 'happen' to have a jointer that needs a new home, ay? A little show and tell would be in order, I would say. Even though my funds are a little low and we're on opposite sides of the continent, I would still like to know more...
Have a good day my friend,
Chris.
Dusty,
What is this about you buyin' old junkie iron? Suely that nice jointer is still Good?
I notice it has 18th Century feet, though, with ball & claw possibly? So it must be really, really old iron.
How long does it purr like a kitten? 'Til the Lake pipes roar?
Lataxe, new brass and steel junkie, as well as an ex-member of the Jan & Dean fan club (left 1963) and listener to obscure Beach Boy songs.
Hey Lataxe,
I played drums with the Beach Boys back in '64 in Las Vegas. Was on a summer camping trip the summer after graduation from high school.
I have a set of drum sticks autographed by Dennis Wilson as a souvenir. The Supremes were there and a funky new group called the Kingsmen, member them?
Oh and I just made my first cabriole leg but sadly haven't tackled the clawed balls yet!

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Lewaye, Lewaye - oh, no; we gotta go!
Coo, Bob, you are as old as moi.
Since both you and Dusty are ex-members of the Beach Boys, I have been practicising my Four Freshmen falsetto, with the help of the cat. I imagine Dusty is already falsetto-proficient after lifting that heavy iron thang he is gloating over. (There goes the old bollock-string and now the high octaves are available once more).
Perhaps there is a new career in the offing for us all? I will dig out that old blue and white striped shirt and the 8 foot board.
Lataxe, being true to his school (old school).

Lataxe,
Hey, we could all make our instruments out of wood.
How does the name The BeachKnots sound!? Or perhaps The Froes?
You could sing lead ala Brian Wilson.

L A Tax ,
Yes , I have a thang for the oldies , I've not been disappointed to date .
The feet are more close to Bun foote style sorta .
" Til the lake pipes roar " I like it ! but we are closer to the River then Lake .So I'd venture to say " til the cow's come home perhaps , unless the creek rises .
La , your post script and tagline have become sometimes more voluminous in copy then your post. You are member to so many and are such a diversified Lataxe , oh yeah BTW I just remembered I played backup with Jimi H at Woodstock , I was on the way back from a craft show . "If you remember the 60s you weren't there "
dusty , the collector and sometimes resurrector of deed mummies and proud of it .

You really cannot beat tools you cannot lift, and, like me, the older the better. I wish I was steam powered! Have fun mate.
That's a nice'n, dusty. The fellas that I know who are akin to the old iron are quite fond of Davis and Wells stuff. Ya won't see any 6" jointer from Jet/Powermatic/Delta etc...... work as well as that ole' beast.
Here's a pic of mine from 1957, since we're talking about old iron.
Enjoy,
Jeff
Hi Jeff ,
Oh Yeah !!! that's what I'm talkin about , very nice indeed .
I have several D & W older shapers that are heck for stout as well .
thanks for sharing

Shucks! The two jointers shown in pictures so far, only have two wedges. One for each table. Mine has eight. One for each corner of each table. 12" cut, 4 1/2" diameter cutterhead, 4 blades, seven feet long. Broken down into it's seven pieces, it still took four men to move it into my basement shop. Came from The Cowen & Co. Foundry of Galt, Ontario, I don't know when.
I ran some 11"x 8/4 white oak across it the other night, and it just purred. No vibration or chatter whatsoever.
Sorry I can't post a picture, don't have that technology.
At a local tool distributor's open house/sale recently, in a discussion with a salesman, he told me the foundry was acquired by Poitras Tools who were in turn acquired by General Mfg. Co.
My planer is a 12" Boyce Crane. Old iron gets in the blood. If you're lucky enough to have some, enjoy it.

What's this about a nice old jointer for sale?
I am in the market for a jointer in the very near future... I've been looking at
the new 8" grizzly but I am tempted to hunt down an older 6" model and use that
until I can afford a parrallelogram 8" model... someday.
It's hard to compete with a well maintained old tool when it comes to performance and quality.
I have my eye on an old 1950's delta rockwell on craigslist... but I'm not sure if it's still for sale.
Tell me about your jointer, and ipost some photos if possible.
I live in Bloomington, IN.

Hi Vincent ,
Unfortunately I am as far West as one can get and still be in the states from your location . I think shipping would out cost the machine .
