Just wondering if anyone is familiar with similar pieces made by the same company , is there much of this stuff still out there in service ?
The Iron swivel under the seats is heavy duty , missing are pullout boards over the drawers and also missing a pair of doors in the opening .The wood looks like Beech and maybe Maple .
The sides and back side are all paneled the piece was perhaps seen on all sides .
The orininal top has a steel band around it , not sure what the original top material was , maybe Slate ?
E.H. Sheldon is the company , thanks for any insight , dusty

dusty,
exceedingly cool.
are you restoring it for a client? from your photos it looks to be maple-huh? it has a school-ish/lab/learning-place look about it. must be those hard, supportless swivel seats makes me think that. what makes you think the original top was slate? funny how these old things end up missing doors and pullout trays, one wonders why.

dusty,
the teacher ahead of me had a specific area for gluing and so all of the benches in the room were solid maple tops. i am not that concerned about spills, stains or glue so my benches are maple with a glue "finish" on 'em. as far as lab-type benches of that vintage, i'm wondering if they didn't have zinc tops.

Dusty,
I'd vote for the jeweler's or some sort of assembly bench. Most of the lab tables I had in school and college were counter height. If there was seating -- it was just stools in the aisle. I do remember the chem lab tops were soap stone if that helps.

A lab bench top would be slate or an extremely heavy black epoxy-like material. If it were my bench, I would replace it with a lab bench top of similar material. It can be had here at ISU for chump change from the University's surplus sales. They usually have quite a lot of it on hand. It can be cut to size with some care and effort.
Alternatively, a nice hard maple top would be pretty attractive also.

Bench Top
I know that soapstone is/was a pretty popular material for lab bench tops. It is pretty unreactive and, I am told, can be machined with woodworking tools. I know most of the tops back in my high school and college chemistry labs were made of it.

Yep, Soap stone.
Soapstone or worse?
I'd make absolutely sure it was soapstone or never cut into it and raise dust. It just might be some sort of asbestos containing stuff. I was using a lab like desk top once for a workbench and cut into it with a jigsaw more or less by accident. It sure didn't remind me of soapstone.
Benchtop Material
All the labs I've worked in, (School, 3 Universities, one Pharmaceutical Lab, Employer's lab) and many I've visited, have had solid wood tops on the old benches. Obviously the differences between the US and Europe go further than driving on the wrong side of the road.
Obviously the differences between the US and Europe go further than driving on the wrong side of the road. That was funny!
I traveled the world and in Australia I was almost hit by a car. I looked 'the wrong way' before stepping out into the street! The driver just yelled out something like 'Damn Yank!'. I smiled and thanked him for not hitting me..... That has happen to me more than a few times in Europe.
I had a good belly laugh on your comment....

I have nice lab-bench for sale 12-5-15
Hi Jamieson,
I saw your two relatively recent inquiries asking if there the lab bench was still available and wondered if you're still interested in purchasing one? I have a very nice one (no seats however) that is currently listed on Madison Craigslist - here is the link: http://madison.craigslist.org/art/5346997623.html
Thanks, sweetwert

Hi Dusty,
I realize that I am almost four years late to this conversation/thread, but I was wondering if your lab bench was still available for sale.
Thanks for any info,
Ian
I found on of these
Hi, just found one of these lab benches. I made plant holders out of the swing arm stools, but I see their selling for $800. I guess it's time to take them down now. I was wondering what the table is worth. It's nor in to bad a shape for almost 100 yrs. old.
