I am using some one-year-old alkyd porch and floor enamel on KD western red cedar. I’ve a half gallon left from a deck project, and am using it to finish the frame parts of an adirondack chair project. A day and a half after brushing on one coat, the film is still tacky. My shop conditions aren’t ideal. It’s been muggy and the shop is in a walkout basement area, with temps in the 65 degree range. One of the leg parts that would fit into our kitchen oven has its paint cured after about 20 minutes at 180 degrees. I am hoping that a day of hot sunshine on the surfaces will cure them. Would some japan drier help? I want a second coat, and was thinking that if I used drier in the paint, and thinned it a little, that the second coat would cure well, and the drier in the second-coat film would finish the cure of the first coat. Sound plausible?

Yes, I think that's a good possibility, but you might want to wait a little longer for a warmer day for it to dry. If it doesn't work, you''ve got a real mess on your hands . . . .
