I recently came across an old Rockwell jointer (model 37-220, if i can believe what I find on OWWM.com) The beds have some rust on them, but there is no pitting, and everything else seems to work fine. The owner is asking $250 (about $200 USD) and i am hoping to talk him down to $175. If i can get it at this price, am I getting a good deal? Is it still a good deal at $250? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I have one! I don't remember what I paid for it a couple of years ago. It works fine, but I can't hurry a piece thru or it gets washboardy. (I've double checked the setting of the knives, which appear OK...) Speaking of which, knives are readily available.
The only issue with mine was that it had had a 3-phase motor in it. When I bought it that motor had been replaced with a single phase, but it still had the three-phase motor contactor wired in. The poor thing would run for maybe ten minutes, and then the contactor would overheat and open... I think I know why the guy was selling it ;-) .
There are lock screws perpendicular to the set screws on the fence, they must be loosened to adjust the set screws.
I just bought a used 37-220 jointer myself. it is my first jointer so i'm still learning how to best use it, you know, get my technique better. i paid $250 for mine and the seller would not come down but it it was in great shape and he and i tweaked a few things before i loaded it into my truck, plus he threw in a pretty nice vice, too. it was just sitting there and he said i could have it. i took the jointer apart, cleaned it, and repainted it. it looks great. i just need some wheels for it now. i had to do some adjusting of the beds but i think i got everything square and true.paul

Your getting it at about half of what my buddy would sell it for after a clean /Lube and maybe paint.Less then half ,I just sold one of mine to a friend for $400. its a different model ,a little beefier ,there a great little machine I have had four over a twenty period.
I have a 4" and 8" as well and like them all.

"The owner is asking $250 (about $200 USD) and i am hoping to talk him down to $175. "
Now why are you throttling that guy, especially after you have established that the machine is in working condition???
That is less than the cost of a mass produced handplane.
If the owner was asking $175 I suspect that there would be someone "hoping to talk him down " to ?
i paid 350 cdn for a 37-220, it was immaculate, newly sharpened and had a 2 hp motor and a huge heavy duty cord
a huge improvemnt over my 4 inch beaver!!
I believe that is the same machine I saw last weekend - being in excellent condition by a fine manufacturer, it is worth $200 - 250. I would hope you would pay a fair price rather than try to beat the owner down - he has a right to be happy too.
I have one also some one offered $150 I was asking $300 Includingn 2 sets of replacement blades and a magna-set blade setter. I still have in my shop as an alternate to my 16" Knapp. The rockwell made a lot of money for me when I used ti=o purchase s2s lumber
