I recently acquired an old workbench with two vises that are made with wooden screws. The wood is very dried out and I believe the screw threads might split under pressure so I am wondering what I should treat them with to restore them. I would appreciate any advise you might share. Thank you, Clark

Apply a mixture of 1/2 boiled linseed oil and 1/2 mineral spirits or turpentine to the wooden parts. Keep applying this mixture until the wood will absorb no more. I then prepare a mixture of paraffin and turpentine in a coffee can placed in a larger pan of water over a hot plate until the paraffin melts. Paint this hot mixture on the threads and that should solve your problem for several years.

Thank you, will try your suggestion. FrankI am new to this knots so if I do not get it right it's because I have not done it before.
