Can anyone fill me in on the superior qualities of the pre war Staney planes. I always hear how the new ones are junk, but didn’t know why. I assume both require tuning to make useable and would need replacement blades, so why would someone want to buy an older Stanley that might require the same amount of tuning as a new one.
P.S. I have avoided this by buying LN, but was curious anyway!
Thanks,
Eric

Fit and finish pretty much sums it up. The older stuff was made for people who earned a living using Stanley tools. The newer stuff is geared for the amatuer. I'd say WW2 is the turning point. There are some good post war planes, and crappy pre war planes, so it is not a well defined line.
Patrich Leach at http://www.supertool.com has a good essay on this.
