I (think) have the opportunity to buy an older Unisaw. I have not seen the saw due to the distance. Seller claims the saw runs really good and that the 1 HP motor performs like a 2 HP motor.
These are the specs:
1- According to the serial number, this saw was manufactured in the mid 50’s.
2- Original 1 HP motor, 110 v, max rpms 1725
3- No motor cover
4- Includes extensions
5- Original fence
6- Seller claims that the saw was used very ‘little’ and bought it from a Dr. who hardly used it. Seller is also selling an ‘industrial’ type jointer, cannot recall the brand. Seller also says the he is retiring and selling most of the big items from his woodshop (this is where my ‘suspicion mind’ comes into action)
7- Asking price, firm, is $725
This is all of the information that I manage to pick up. Is this a good deal?? From what I read in OWW, it seems that it should be going for around or less than $450.
Opinions, advice, previous experiences will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hrm, I purchased a used 1946 unisaw (which is really the same thing)
and would note the following:
I would be more inclined to ask questions about the table
surface. Is it rusted, pitted, worn? Does the base or cabinet
have rust? You can probably bank on changing the arbor bearings,
at least. It may need some parts, but if you are lucky it
will have everything. (forget the motor cover, I only
know one person who bought a saw that had the egg shaped cover)...
Interestingly, I have never seen a 1750rpm motor that was 110v.
All the ones I have seen (from that era) are 220/440v three phase
motors. Don't get me wrong, they are great and have more torque than
the new motors (he was right, they perform like a 3 horse, really),
but if you do not have three phase bank on getting it or a converter.
Again, I am unsure of that motor being single phase much less single
phase 110v. (perhaps I am wrong)...
Other than that they are great saws if you have the time and
possibly spare cash to get it going. I ended up scraping and
painting mine, putting new bearings in it and later on purchasing
a new fence.

eug,
I think that may be a little too much $ for the old Uni-saw. I bought one less than a year ago for $225 out of our "Little Nickel" want ad paper. Of course it was pretty ugly. The miter gage and motor cover were missing; the table/extensions were no longer flat and were quite rusty.
Mine did however, have a 1 1/2 hp, wired for 220v motor. It has the original rip fence as does yours.
I realize that everyone does not want to invest all the time and energy it takes to fix up an old saw. I'm only trying to make the point that with the original fence and a 1 hp, 110 motor your's (IMHO) is over priced. If it had a good after market rip fence and a bit more power, I'd say it might be worth the money for a "ready to go" saw (I'm assuming it is).
Just my 2 cents
Enjoy what ever you get!

I'd say no with that motor and the original fence.
eug,
Keep looking. I recently saw a 5 month old Unisaw w/50 inch bismeyer fence in the recycler for $1200. The good deals are out there. This isn't one of them.
Just my thoughts,
Len
I'd agree the price is a little to high. I bought mine for $375.00 at an auction. Came with fence square and blades. Also missing the motor guard. Mine is a 220 2hp.
Keep looking and good luck,
Dave
