I am looking for a new jointer and I was looking at the Oliver 10″ straight knife cutter head. Anyone own one or can give me some advice on this jointer.
Thanks

This jointer is made in China I don't know about the quality though. This company is using the old Oliver name and logo but it is not the same company that made equipment for years in the US.
Good luck
Troy
Here's a place to read a review about the Oliver 10":

It's a long and heavy machine and has the best of motors, the Baldor 3hp, Triple belt drive. A machine this size will take a 220v, 30amp circuit. Shipping a jointer this size is going to cost around $200....
I've seen some Oliver 10" models on Ebay, those model designs show a different/cheaper switch placement, so I don't know if they are seconds or not...
Grizzly and Woodworker Supply have a new model of 10" jointer in their most recent catalogues, but neither have the 3hp Baldor motor.
Bill
I'd look at the Yorkcraft, Invicta and Grizzly. I'd be less concerned about the Baldor motor myself.
Thanks for the advice. I am a little leery about Grizzly unless their 12" ultimate is a good machine. The Grizzly 10" looks a little wimpy.

Grizzly has come along way. I can't seem to open the Yorkcraft page but I thought those were priced around $1600. Persoanlly I'd buy a used one and refurbish it but I repair machines for a living so I can deal with any possible problem.

Take a look at the Bridgewood 12." I have one with the spiral cutterhead and I have had it for four years and have yet to change the knives. All you have to do is rotate the carbide cutters 90 degrees and you are good to go. I think they have their tools on sale right now. They use Baldor motors. Wilke gets their machines from Taiwan not China and their fit and finish is better than my Laguna TS & BS. They install motor and Square D controls in their plant in York, PA. I picked my jointer and 20" planer up at the shop and they let me demo them before I took them home. I think their website is wilkemach.com.
Have you ever tested the table on your Bridgewood for being straight. I watched the video FW had on 8" jointers and the test looked like Grizzly had a pretty good grind on the tables. I also see that the price difference between the Grizzly and the Bridgewood are very close, but the main difference is the controls and the motor.
My Grizzley 8" jointer was spot on right out of the crate. Perfectly flat. The spiral cutterhead does a fantastic job, just as good as any straight knifed jointer I've seen.

I tested the table and fence with a Veritas straight edge and feeler gauges and it was dead flat. In the FWW test on table saws the Bridgewood had the flattest table also. For 8" jointers Wilke only carries them in the Yorcraft line and they have Taiwan motors and controls. When I was at the plant I saw them wiring up a planer with Square D controls just like mine. I have never used their customer service ( have'nt needed to) but I hear it's great on this forum.
I just received the Oliver 22" Planer with a shelix head. This thing screams high quality. I have seen the jointers up close and they are top notch. Spring for a spiral head, you won't regret it.
Dear Try,
Where did you get that? Sunhill lists a 20" & 24", but no 22" and they are not offering the "Shelix" either. Just curious.http://olivermachinery.net/machines.asp?machine=4455Best,John
Oliver lists the 20" Model but the cutter and bed allow 22" boards.
The machine is simalar to powermatics offering, and the spiral cutter head they put in them is a shelix. I guess they don't pay extra to advertise it?
Mine came from Conestoga Wood Machinery on the slow boat from Tiawan, took two months to deliver. I got word from Oliver in WA. that they would take delivery, change the cutter head out from straight to Shelix and test run, and then ship to me.
They were great to deal with, and I'm glad I waited.
Dear Try,
OK, I understand. Pretty cool about the Byrd head. Do you mind if I ask what all that set you back?John
$5,175. Delivered. We replaced a 60's delta 18" wedgebed. Its still makes me smile to see it dead center of the shop. Can't say enough about it.
Try, let us see a picture or two of this item, please.Philip Marcou
I am off for the weekend, but its the dead same as posted on the Oliver(imported) website at:
