Oliver 166BD 12″ Jointer “Knife Grinding Attachment”
Hello out there….yes, I’m a newbie on this site so go easy on me! Hoping this site is easier to navigate than what I just experienced trying to post on the Old Woodworking Machines(Vintage Machinery) website! Wow, what a challenge.
Anyway, I have recently purchased a Oliver 166BD 12″ Jointer, aprox.1957, which also came with the original knife grinding attachment. Since this jointer will be a secondary one, I will not put many miles on it and will most likely sell the grinding attachment so that it goes somewhere more deserving where it will get a better workout. Any of you familiar with the market value of this attachment? I have a good idea, but would like your input as a second opinion.
If you are interested in purchasing it, then let me know. F.Y.I., if you are a buyer, your suggested retail for it of $100 won’t fly!
Thanks folks, I will post photo’s if there’s a way to and if I can figure it out, or I can email you direct.

It looks like a nicely made tool in excellent condition. I'm guessing it is intended to grind the knives on the machine, which is commoner on planers than jointers. It looks much more like a planer knife grinder than other jointer knife grinders I've seen. I'm guessing it must sit on or be bolted to the outfeed table to put the handcranks on the operator side of the machine. I've only ever been in one shop that ground jointer knives on the machine, a cooperage that built die vats and water tanks using very specialized jointers.
I expect the market for this tool is very small. Ebay and craigslist are the markets for tools of this type these days. Ebay if it will ship UPS, craigslist if it won't. Both of them are very efficient for setting prices. Look at what other specialized tools are going for and go from there. Good luck. I hope there's a good home for it somewhere.
Thanks for your info. It turns out I was able to sell it to a local friend who also has an Oliver jointer but had no grinding attachment. He was very happy about it, and I offset the cost of the purchase of the jointer. Win, win..
Check out http://www.OWWM.com really the best place for information about old cast iron machinery. There are a lot of people out there who lust after and even use the old Oliver machines and many more jointers are out there than the accessories. I think that sight has a classified section as well. I am sure you will find somebody who is desperate for one of those knife grinders on that sight. Good luck and just in case you don't know those Oliver jointers are nice machines.

Thanks Troy, I had actually started out by trying to sell it through the OWWM site, but the administrator of the site gave me grief about my approach. I guess there are MANY guidelines on that site, so it was a bust for me. I was able to sell it locally to a friend who wanted it, so it worked out fine.
Thanks, Jon
It looks like the knife grinder that was on my old Oliver planer. It's not for a jointer.
No, actually, it was a dedicated grinding attachment for that exact jointer. My purchase of the jointer and grinding attachment also included the original owners manual, which includes and clearly shows and explains the attachment, how to use it, and much information. Not sure why we have conflicting info...maybe my photo's do not show it clearly enough and you think it looks different than what you are familiar with?
Thanks for the input, and yes, I have already sold it to an Oliver owner of a 16" jointer, which it is made to accomodate.

Oliver Grinder
The grinder shown will work on an Oliver Jointer or Planer. Several years ago I purchased, among other machines, an Oliver 166BD Jointer and an Oliver 399D Planer. They are a set, in that both machines were set up to to share the same grinding attachment. In addition to the bolt holes, each of the mounting feet should have a small tapered pin hole to line up the grinding bar in relation to the cutterhead. My grinding bar has 2 pair of holes, one pair for each machine. These holed are drilled and reamed after the bar is positioned properly in the factory, or by a Millwright. In addition the outfeed table on the jointer will have a grinding position mark. There will also be a long pin to register the cutterhead at Top Dead Center.

Is the Oliver knife grinding attachment still available?
