I have an Oliver Lathe. I am not sure of the age but the machine has NO.55 cast into the face of the bed. Recently I had to install a new belt and in reassembleing the dirive mechanism, I ran into problems. I can not get my drive to stay in securiely after the lathe is turned on. Does anyone have a delailed instruction for the re-installation of the drive mechanism or know here one can be obtained?
Thanks, Tom Noonan

Thanks for your help. I have finally gotten the lathe back together, Seems I had the two bearings in backwards. Trial and error finally won out. I did go to the Oliver site and downloaded a manual for a machine close to mine in age.
I was quite anxious about this as I am in the process of building a table from very expensive vintage (read very old) oak, and had three and 1/2 legs turned when the belt broke. Got the fourth leg back on the lathe and as of now have the mortises completes and ready for the apron and top.
again, thanks for your help.

Tom,
You are welcome. I'm glad I could help, sorry for some of the wrong #'s. I've got an old Oliver myself, been thinking about selling it as I'm not a turner. I did not see the lathe on the site meantioned earlier. I'm not in any hurry to sell the thing.
While we are thanking folks........ Thanks Turningtom, for the orginal post of the Oliver site.
Good luck to you,
Dale

Tom: I envy you this old machine. In 1940,I started my work as a patternmaker in an aircraft shop full of heavy machines. As I remember, the table saws, lathes, jointers and planers were all Olivers. Would you believe that the jig saw had a square table at least 36" square and the blade itself was 14" long? This may explain why my own shop includes old and heavy machinery that I have rebuilt. Good luck with your lathe. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬PAT¬¬¬¬¬¬
Pat:
Know what you mean. I saw the lathe adveritsed for sale and asked a friend who is a professional turner to call and inquire about it for me, as he might know better what questions to ask. His reply was when you can get an Oliver lathe at the advertised price the only question to ask is when can I pick it up.

Tom:
The 800 number listed on the Oliver Locator website gets you to Oliver Machinery. They spun off the parts and service division recently and They can be contacted at (616) 336-0034. Ask for Mr. Rich Fink, who has a very good knowledge of Oliver lathes and parts. I'm sure he can give you advice on the drive adjustment issue. You can also get manuals and parts from them, but most of their stuff is pretty pricey. They usually discourage you from ordering manuals due to the price of reprinting (ca. $75.oo), but they are pretty good with advice, etc. Good luck - you have a great lathe!
Thankis for the info. Will follow up. The web site posted a couple of days ago was also very helpful.
