Hello ,
I am using the Omnijig to make half blind dovetails. After setting up all the stop, and making sure all my board are the same thickness and size, after making the dovetails for a drawer ( and closely following the video) I end up with boards that are “higher” than the other two. I am using both sides of the jig to cut the boards which are 3.5″ wide ( according to the instructions, they have to be in 7/8 increments, for the template I am using). I don’t have any other problems like to loose or too tight..
Please help!
Thanks
Manny

Manny,
I make alot of drawers with the Omini jig & have this problem from time to time.
Do you have the side stops set correctly? Those are what determine if the sides & ends come out even. If the stops are set correctly, then it could be that the pieces were not tight against the stops. Be sure the ends of your pieces are square & you have the parts pushed tight against the stops before clamping them in the jig.

Hi Chris,
Thanks , let me ask you.. I am using the template for half blind dovetails (1/2").. what is the distance for the stops on the top and on the side of the jig?
Thanks
Manny
Manny,
Do you have a manual? On page 6 & 7 it shows how to set the stops for 1/2" half blind dovetails.
If you do not have a manual here is a link to an online version.

I first make sure the stops are set properly. I then mark the drawer pieces so that I cut the pins and the tails for one joint at the same time. I find that if I keep the sides of the drawer in proper order I get good results. If I happened to cut pins for one corner and the tails for another corner at the same time the joint would not be right. I think this is due to the stop settings, no matter how hard you try to get them the same they are just a little bit off. As long as I keep the pieces in order and cut the joint as one the results seem to be fine.
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks Joe, let me ask you..the fitting I am testing is 2 pieces of wood, and not 4 pieces. I know there is a special order that you need to move the pieces on a drawer, a special sequence, that is, but I keep setting the stops the way the video and manual are stating, but not getting good results, as to on side is "higher " than the next. I am cutting the wood in 7/8 increments... you think this is my problem??
Thanks
By higher I assume you mean not in proper alignment. If with the stops set as the instructions say and you are getting the pieces not in proper alignment the only solution I see is to adjust the stops until you get the pieces aligned the way you want them. The stops were put there to make adjustments and I see no reason not to adjust them to get the results you want. The first dovetail jig I used had factory set stops and you could not adjust them. When I got the Ominjig I got much better joints. I'll be the first to admit it is not easy to get it set right but once it's set it works great.
Sorry for the input but just a question..
I only have a Leigh so not sure BUT.. You did not state HOW MUCH higher...
So my stupid answer.. or better yet a question.. Did you joint the edges? If off 90 degrees on the 'sticks' it will make a small difference..
Sorry.. Just a thought I had...
Hi and thanks ...
I follow the instructions exactly as the video and book, and yes, the boards are flat and jointed.. I am thinking that maybe the jig is new, but the manual and video are old.. what I did now is move the stops by eye, because I was getting the pins and sockets on opposite sides much thinner than the other side (0.23" !) so ,I got better results... the instructions are to cut the wood in increments of 7/8" , and I am using the collar, router bit ,and everything that came with the jig....
I guess I will keep trying .. any thoughts....?
Years ago I had possesion of a friends Omni Jig. Inspite of what the video said the pins were 1/64" less than 7/8" if I remember correctly. Put the female cut on the widest board you can and do the math. I set up a sample cut and used it to layout drawers so I wasn't always reaching for a calculator.
